How do you guys deal with allergies when farming? I just started to hobby around on a couple acres. I cut my 4 ft high Winter Rye this weekend and it tore me up bad. Sneezed 30+ times. Had to blow my nose 30+ times. And then was clogged tight for 24 hours. Took the fun right out of my hobby.

Do you guys wear a dust mask, take some kind of medication, etc.? I take a daily over the counter allergy med but that did not avoid this whatsoever.

I am fortunate and do not have
allergies but my two sons get shots.
Nothing over the counter helps them.
They went to the doctor and got
allergie test.

I second the flonase. I have used benadryl since I was five, makes me tired. I use flonase and claritin seem to work better.

Not farming but I do have allergy issues. I hate going to the doctor and I hate taking medicine. About the only doc I don't object to is the chiropractor, and he
recommended Ortho-Molecular Products D-Hist. The way he described it is that it's not a pill to replace the body's functions, it's a natural supplement to
support/stimulate the body's functions. I did not take the official loading dose, just started taking 1 pill a day. It has made a huge difference. I used to have a
constant headache right between my eyebrows. That has been virtually eliminated, unless I get into some serious dust and pollen.

I also use Flonase as a nasal spray. Works great. Use it as directed. Once in each side once a day. It will take a few days for it to work the best. I would be lost with out it...

I've used Flonase before but ClariSpray works better for me. My main problem though is my sight. My eyes glaze over so bad I can't see. For a while eyedrops helped but had to quit. I was using it so much it was burning my eyes.

I have allergies to dust and mold, so whenever I mow the yard or am out doing dusty jobs, I always wear a mask, as the others said Flonase is your best friend. I've used it for more than twenty years and couldn't get along without it. That said it's not addictive and has no side effects, and its sold over the counter. Tried allegra for a long time and all I got was tired.

Flonase twice a day, and 1 Allegra D a day. Regular Allegra does not work for me. Some of the year, I don't need to take the Allegra.

Some folks may laugh at this but
here goes. I've had terrible
allergies for years. I took 4-6
Tylenol or Advil allergy pills
every day. Grass cutting really
knocked me out. One day I
researched herbal remedies and
started taking a some herbs every
day. 99.9% of my allergies are
cleared up. In the last couple
years I've had to take Tylenol
allergy pills only twice. And
,dang ,they work if you ain't so
used to em! I take nettle &
echinacea everyday. And goldenseal
and olive leaf several times a
week. Headache gets willow. If you
ain't a fan of medications it's
worth a shot. It works for me.
Email is open if you want more

Flonase 2x daily, Zertec, couple squirts of saline, Tylenol. I had it bad last Wed, mowed lawn 3 1/2 hrs. Tuesday. Was a cloudy day, no dust flying, but I got into something, eyes felt like they were full of dirt, dry, watering, itchy, burning all at the same time, nose dry and watering too. Didn't come out of that until about Friday.

Ooops. I forget to mention the local honey. I add a table spoon in my coffee every day. And eat a few spoon fulls during the day

Wear a mask while working and try this when you are done: Mix 10 oz water (a coffee mug), 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp vinegar. MEASURE the salt and vinegar - DO NOT eye-ball these amounts!! Hold a tps. full of this solution close under your nostrils and snort the liquid up your nose. Do this at least three times. Snort it hard enough so that the liquid runs all the way up our sinuses and down your throat. When it runs down your throat you will cough and gag and make a real spectacle of yourself. That's the way it has to be and it is a very effective way to clear your sinuses of a days worth of any type of dust. Effective, no side effects and it's pretty much free. It's better at clearing the upper surface of the sinuses than a neti pot.

I get sneezing and severe eye itching from cutting hay and lawn mowing but it varies year to year and even day to day. I carry a Claritin Ready Tab. They dissolve in seconds under your tongue and work in 5-10 minutes.

I take flonase, zyrtec, singular, and allergy drops every day.
I have been on this medication for 15 plus years. I started
taking the drops, same as the shots, about 5 years ago. I am
allergic to grass, hay, molds, dust, and trees. All of which I
am around daily.

I use a Netty bottle at night to flush
my sinuses. Works well. Also have used
nasacort sometimes. Usually the saline
flush in the Netty does the trick

What is more important to you, to be a hobby farmer, or to deal with the cards you were dealt, and look after your health and well being?

Not everyone can be a "farmer" and tolerate dust/dirt and if you can't, WHY fight it?

Oops has the right idea. Use the Benadryl, and Flonase, and wear a mask, but the most important thing is to rinse your sinuses out after you have finished a dusty period of work. Netty pot will do it but it takes too long. Pick up 4.5 ounce bottles of saline at any drug or grocery store and breath a spray or two into each nostril 2X a day. It changed my life.

Seems like Flonase is in the majority here. Maybe I will try replacing my current daily with this and see what happens. Can also take some extra precautions when I know I will be exposed. Without asking around, the most local honey I'm aware of is probably 15 miles as the crow flies. I will get some of that and add to my coffee in the morning. Heck maybe I'll really like that.

(quoted from post at 19:09:13 06/18/18) About a teaspoonful of"local" honey a day should take care of most allergies.

I have toast with peanut butter and honey every morning for at least 10 years now. No effect at all on my allergies.

Is it local honey though? After reading the replies here I did some research on how honey helps allergies. It has to be local honey because your body can supposedly build a tolerance to the local pollen.

Yes. It is local honey.

(quoted from post at 17:08:30 06/18/18) I use Flonase (inhaler)

You can buy generic Flonase (fluticasone) at Sam's. A card with 6 bottles (6 month supply) is about $30. Dirt cheap and effective for most of us.

Fight it all my life. My uncles farmed.I loved to help. Working ground and planting was not an issue but harvesting or hay makeing forget it ! As miserable as makeing hay must be I bet it still is better than trying to live with allergies. Benedryl even 1 small pill at night helps some but feel like crap all the next day. As a kid I had the shots and they didn't seem to help either. flonase seems to help but it does seem to start makeing my glands sore ? so I can't do it much or often. Had nasel surgery for polups that was not fun either and hasn't helped much either and lost alot of sense of smell from it. I still can get sinus infections really fast !

If running "open station" I use the medical type face mask that is rectangular, expandable, and fit over your nose to under your chin. On medications,
the popular OTC the 10 mg Loratadine tablets, one or two dissolved under the tongue kick in in about 10 minutes, no side effects other than maybe lips
and eyes drying slightly. Much less of a problem than the running faucet sinuses.

The other thing I do is modify my method to suit the wind and keep the dust or if spraying down wind of me. Can make for a bumpy ride when you
plowed the field around in a circle and in this case came across it back and forth.
