Why! Lug Nuts

Why do lug nuts come 4 in a package when 80% of the cars and trailers on the road take 5 per wheel?

I am resurrecting a small trailer with 5 lug wheels and I need lug nuts. Going to have to buy 3 $8.00 packages to get the 10 I need or pay 3 bucks a piece individually

The folks who manufacture (or bulk purchase) and package those are not doing it for your convenience. They sell the product in such a way so as to sell as many as they can. There are dozens of items packaged in inconvenient quantities. It is marketing 101.

some wheels have 4 lugs some have 5 some have 6 some 8. 5 lugs x 4 tires = 20 divide by 4 = 5 packages of 4 none left over. the math comes out if you have 4,5,6or 8 lugs per wheel

Dad needed six o rings for his German diesel 706. IH packages
them by five. He had to buy ten to get six.

What do you mean hot dog come in package of 10? Bought Eckrich hot dogs yesterday and 8 in a package.

like buying nuts and washers in the little plastic packages. You need 4 of each. 4 washers in a package and 3 nuts in a package. I just
buy several packages figuring I'll use them sometime.

Exactly ! 4 bolt-4 pkgs of 4 ,5 bolt -5 pkg of 4 , 6 bolt-6pkg of 4, 8 bolt 8 pkg of 4....so what is the problem ? There is always the auto yards where you usually pick them up for a buck a nut. I don't see any problem the way they are packaged, needing only one is your problem not the suppliers.

That's just an old joke that's been around for years. I have no idea if it's true any more or not. I just threw it in to be a smart a$$.

Bob ...... remember your teacher covering lowest common denominator in math class? I guess that is one practical application where there are
four wheels with 4,5,6, or 8 lug nuts per wheel. Look at it this way, you now have spares .....

O'Reilly's has them one t as time so you can buy one or you can buy 20 or what ever number you want.

Yes as a kid champion did that. Half the time they didn't have all of the boxes and had to break them up anyway for what you needed. What was really bad is you needed 8 and they only had 6.

Boy you must be cheap. The package of 3 cost $8.00 that's about $2.67 for each nut. The single nut cost you $3.00 that's only 33 cents
difference .

I worked on car- trucks and tractors to make extra money back in late 50s-early 60S and all the manufactures packaged them that way.

Yeah the old joke doesn't work anymore.

When the cost of inputs went up, the meat packers had two choices. Either raise the price of a package of hot dogs, or reduce the number of hot dogs in the package. Knowing consumers flip their lids when prices go up, most chose to reduce the number of hot dogs.

Besides in the old days, after you ran out of rolls, you broke out the butter! Slice of dog, little dab of butter on it... rare delicacy!

I know old you are always talking about Oreilys, Don?t ever remember going there and getting anything.Because they never have it or heard of it.and cannot get one,So I don?t mess with them.I go to NAPA, they know what you are talking about.

It is all about who is behind the counter. In my area to go to NAPA one has to drive 30 plus miles or to go to O'Reilly's I drive 7 miles. But I have also been going to this O'Reilly's for 30 plus years. O'Reilly's has moved 3 time in those years and have had many different managers to boot. Many know when I walk in I'll be looking for something a bit off the wall. So in many way I have taught a number of them how to find what I need. One person who works there I have known for over 30 years and the manager buys eggs fro mem every week

That completely varies by the store. One local NAPA store has a kid who's usually on the phone and gives you the blank stare. Another NAPA store is okay.
The local O'Reilly manager is a car racer who knows his stuff, no matter what you want. Some of his employees, not as much....
I always know what I want, usually with part numbers, before I go into each store.

Three packs of 4 @ $8/pack = $24 for 12 lug nuts

Two packs of 4 @ $8/pack plus 2 @ $3 each = $22 for 10 lug nuts.

With the first option you get two spares for $1 each.
