Rear tires and rims, cheaper to go from 36 to 38?

I've got an old Oliver 70, and it has 12.4x36 tires on cast centers with split rims, and pretty much everything is bad rims and tires

I've been debating digging it out, would it be cheaper to replace with step up 38 inch rims? I haven't been able to find prices for those rims.

I've faced that with 40s on my 70. I found a good used pair, probably the last ones that exist, but you might be as well off to by a pair of hubs for it out of the boneyard and go to pressed steel 38s. For that matter,as cheap as those 70s sell, you might be able to find one that doesn't run and has pressed steel 38s on it.

I would go wih 38" rims. However, your old splits may be 'flat'/double bevel.,not the drop center type. That really shouldn't matter. Just make some 'ears' that can be welded to the rims with holes for bolts to the cast wheels. Step down rims are not nessesary if you use the described method. You could probably find a good set of used rims if you stay away from stepdown. Either 'double bevel,or drop center would work. More than one way to "skin a cat".

I'm thinking Miller tire had found a place to make 40" tires. Could be wrong. If I'm right you know they won't be cheap.

They did have. I thought they sold out. Don't know if they ever had any more made or not. They were radial I think. Buy ya,the price was more than the tractor was worth.
