rust in gas tank

Had the tractor go down right after baling my first 300 bales. got another field to go once it drys up some from last two days of rain. Took carb gas line and sediment off. I suspected rust and that was it. Why can't I put some earth magnets in the tank to keep the migrating rust from entering the fuel system. Just to buy me more time til I can clean and coat the inside of the tank. What do you think? gobble

In have cleaned my tank as best as I can without removing the tank. I have a couple of hard drive magnets on the bottom of the tank. Once or twice a year the sediment bowl will plug up, and I pull the magnets off and let the gas wash the tank out. Every time I do that, it is longer till I have to do it again.

I have a D-17 that has a very rusty tank and what I did was install a sediment bowl with a tall screen and also a tall bowl. I have run it this way for years now and I just make sure to dump the sediment bowl when I see it a 1/4 of the way full of rust. Been running just fine for years this way. It does help to mix some ATF in with your gas so it helps break down the rust some. One can also put a magnet on the out side bottom of the tank and that will lock the rust in that area.

thanks guys, I just need to get by til I can do a proper repair, of course no telling when that might be. Time has a way of slipping by. lol gobble

This has worked for me. Unscrew the sediment assembly, and tap threads in the topside. Get a plastic bolt and drill a hole up the center, but not all the way through. Drill a couple cross holes, then take a spray tip screen, just the screen not the plastic, and slip it on the bolt. Cut the bolt to length. Works good and still have good fuel flow

I had a tractor with the same problem. I took the sediment bowl assembly out from the bottom of the tank so there was a good drain hole, then I used the pressure washer with high pressure nozzle through the filler hole, cleaned right up. Had to flush it several times.

Its easier to just find the right diameter fuel line and cut a 1 inch piece and put it into the top of the sediment bulb fixture to act as a "standpipe" to keep the crud from going out of the tank.

Had to pull my tank on the farmall 200, lots of rusty sediment plugging up the carb. Did the pea gravel inside agitation and worked good. Been lucky since with no rust in sediment bowl. Hardly ever have keep a half tank of gas in it.. I have been putting MMO mixed in with my gas, maybe its helps keep rust down?

Just clean the sediment bowl on a regular basis. When you notice it is about 1/4 to 1/3 full of crud, clean it out. Eventually you will need to do it only once or twice per year.

Did the same thing on a tank. Pressure washer works great. You need to add one of those little screens that fit in the hole of the bowl where it screws into the tank. Night and day different. Steiner sells them.

Good fix. I have a cub that kept clogging. I put that filter screen in the top of the sediment bowl and the rust flakes would not get past it. I siphoned the rust off the bottom from time to time until it quit coming off. I had to drill the hole a little to get a snug fit. Only downside is I don't get the last 1/4 inch of fuel so it look like its not empty when you look in. The Cub has a baffle in the tank that makes it hard to clean.

thanks for posting the picture. My fuel stoppage was at the inlet to the sediment bowl assembly. I took apart the carb and cleaned the fuel line to just reassure myself that I had fixed any possibilities. Got a five day window to do hay so should be good to go. Again thanks for the adcice one and all. gobble
