Guess I was over weight

I looked up the numbers tonight, I have a 2016 F250 crew cab short box Diesel. The weight with me and fuel should be about 7500 pounds, box was empty, I was pulling 17,500 pounds of NH3, which puts me in at 25K GVWR. I have 24K plates; wonder if Ag is exempted for over weight in Iowa? The truck had plenty of snot, but I could tell that was all I wanted behind me, especially with no trailer brakes.

you are a braver man than me david, that much weight with no trailer brakes, and you forgot one calculation in your weight! the weight of the trailer, is it goose neck triaxle? around another 7k! I can legaly haul 15k on my triaxle gooseneck (21k gvw) with my 1 ton dodge dually and brakes on all 5 axles it's all I want.

It was a double tank ammonia trailer, pulled all over around here with pickups, but just heavy.

We pulled double 8 ton gears loaded with hay with ours, but at 20 mph not highway speeds. I presume you?re going slow as well?

Friends dad was pulled over in the 90?s for triple towing 8 ton gears behind their F350 dump truck that was also loaded. It was a 6.9 L non-turbo, I have no idea how it made it up the hill just below where he was pulled over, the thing had no power.

ok that explains it, but still a lot over weight for a 3/4 ton truck, and not having any trailer brakes. I am guessing slow and steady was the order of the day.

I googled this tonight, looks like max speed "should" be 25 MPH, but do not think anyone goes that slow.

It wont really matter till You have an accident; Have an accident, & attorneys will be sending the victims in the hospital flowers, & business cards. Then Your really in for it!

Straight from the ISU web page:
In Iowa, all trucks and combinations are allowed to operate in excess of their license registration weight by up to 5 percent, but are not allowed to exceed the maximum gross weight listed for total wheelbase. However, if transporting raw agricultural products* trucks or combinations are allowed to operate in excess of their license registration weight by up to 25 percent, but are not allowed to exceed the maximum gross weight listed for total wheelbase. A provision has been added for this exception to allow processed grain (i.e. cracked corn) as a raw product if the corn is transported to the processing facility and immediately returned to the farm. Additionally, a farm plated truck transporting distiller?s grain is also included under the 25 percent weight tolerance waiver. These two exemptions, 5 and 25 percent tolerance, apply only in the state of Iowa; the one exception is in Minnesota the 25 percent tolerance stands for Iowa farm plated vehicles.

Well, This applies to ag products. which I would take to mean produced on a farm, as opposed to used on a farm. It might be difficult to convince a jury that a farm is producing NH3.

Ir is spring in Iowa. Time to get the crops planted, and apply the fertilizer and whatever else is needed. I see a LOT of pickup trucks pulling those double anhydrous tanks. Some of the trucks are probably only 1/2 tons. If any are involved in any kind of incident, law enforcement will respond. Otherwise, As long as everything goes smoothly, no one gives a pickup truck pulling an anhydrous tank a second glance.

An even bigger concern is leaving those tanks in a field, unattended overnight. If the meth-heads find them, the tanks will be empty. They take what they want and then just walk away.

Yup, law enforcement maybe followed by lawyers. if someone were to be seriously hurt. That is just the world that we live in now.

(quoted from post at 19:45:46 04/30/18) Aren?t they on implement tires and only supposed to be operated under 25 mph anyway ?

The rules have changed somewhat on the tires. Any implement that will be transported on a public road must be equipped with D.O.T. approved tires. I don't know about the 25 mph rule, but 25 mph would be plenty fast enough on just about any paved road around here. Anything faster would get things bouncing pretty good, and then you would lose control.
