Leaking trany housing

Finally got warm enough to work on my 1030 some more. I got this rear end that was suposed to be all rebuilt. In the short time I ran it it developed an oil leak out the rear end. Today I got to look at it and found this. The housing was cracked and repaired and is not cracked now, it just leaks through a pin hole in the weld. They had smeared what looks like jb weld on it to seal it and that held for at least the 20 years it sat til I started using it. Do you think some Redcote inside will work to seal it? Or other recommendations. I can pull the axle housing and re-weld it if necessary, but I don't think strength is an issue, only leaking. I posted this on the case forum too.

redcote would be a good choice to seal the porous cast. maybe give it some devcon over the weld once cleaned up .

I'd be a little worried about it starting to leak after starting to use it as in something might be moving ever so slightly.Just a pin hole I'd drill it a little, clean it with
ether and use Marine JB Weld on it,if that doesn't work move onto more involved fixes.

Clean the crack out with brake clean... warm it up till warm to the touch (remembering that brake clean is very flammable be sure it evaporates first) then with a little paint brush work the JB weld into the crack, the warm housing will let it soak into the crack nicely,,then after it drys paint it.. on housings where you can't gravity in I put a shop vac on the fill hole and let it draw the warm JB weld into the pin hole or crack,, the thing to think about is it works best if it can get down into the crack,,just wiping it onto the side is not good enough..

Jon What I have done with good results is to clean the area inside and out the best you can with brake/parts cleaner. Apply light heat to boil out anything in the porous housing. Then I use a product called "Seal All" It is made to resist petroleum based products. YOU do not need a lot of it to work. I light coating will work fine.

I like to rough the outside of the housing up. I have a little sand blaster that one holds a quart of sand that works really well. Where you have the transmission cover off sand blasting is not a good idea. Do you have a pneumatic needle scaler??? That will also rough up the housing too.

I have not had very good luck with JB weld or Red coat types of products, in these type of applications. I think the trouble is getting it clean enough for either of those products is hard on a porous casting.
