Tractor dilemma JD vs Kubota

Our JD dealer upped the hp to a 5100M with front fenders, heavy loader loaded tires and wheel weights. He has it prices almost exactly as a M6S-111 Kubota trimmed the same and included 5 yr extended powertrain warranty. I like both tractors and both dealerships, pretty well down to a coin flip. Any suggestions? Service at both dealerships is A-1.

That's a question with no "right" answer.

I'm absolutely sold on Kubota but have nothing bad to say about JD.

I own 5 Kubotas (bought another yesterday). The only JD that I have ever owned is a 730 because my nearest JD dealer is about 50 miles away whereas my CNH/Kubota dealer is only 5 miles from my place

I would probably go back to the Kubota dealer and tell him that I'm going to buy the JD unless he can sweeten his deal.

Since the tractors are approximately the same, consider resale value. In my area, green is better for resale.

I like my Kubota?s but the swing shift in the S models isn?t my favourite. Least favourite part of my Massey with speedshift is also that style of range change.

I would operate the loaders on both of the tractors. I'm sure you will notice that the Deere loader will cycle faster, and you will be able to operate the bucket and raise the loader at the same time. Kubota, i am fairly certain you will not be able to do that with. one other thing that i noticed is that with the Kubota, when i sit in the seat, my leg would hit the electronic shift buttons on the RH arm rest.

For me, it would be no question, i would go with the Deere.

I'd go with the Deere, more cubes, proven engine, and actually more fuel efficient that the Kubota according to the NE tests....

Thank you for the responses! When you add the lease payments and rv together the Deere is actually 10 000 more but that's to be expected and doesn't make the decision any easier. My cousin just bought a kubota in a cab but has the same style shifter as the rops so I'm going over tomorrow to have a closer look at his. I've priced Deere against kubota 4-5 times over the years and this is the first time it was actually a close contest. Our Deere salesman already lost 2 sales to kubota in this area in the last few weeks I think he's trying to regain some ground.

I don,t know where you are getting {I am fairly certain you will not be able to do that) Kubota bucket and lift arms will work at the same time .

Phillip,

I suggest that you calculate oil changes, filters and regular service for a period of five years. I bet you find Kubota to be considerably lower cost. I doubt anyone makes a better engine than Kubota. I have a Toro mower with Kubota engine that has never consumed oil between changes and probably has 7500 to 8000 hours on it.

The lease payment is the same but if you bought it the total cost of the Deere would be 10 more.

I can say that Kubota motors are rock solid. As I have owned several skid steer loaders with them. I can also say that JD parts system is second to none on delivery. I am not sure how fast Kubota's is as I have never used it.

I can tell you that the 276 motor in the 5100M is a darn good motor too. I have a JD 6400 that just turned over 19,500 hours with a 276 motor in it. Only motor work was a blow head gasket at 16,000 hours. Even with JD making be pretty mad over their dealer consolidation deals I would go with the JD over the Kubota in this case.

Agreed, Rust.

I have five Kubotas.

Bought the fifth two days ago.

Never any trouble with any of them, even my first, bought in 1994. Nothing but lube oil and filters. Nothing. Not so much as a fuse, fan belt or light bulb. Nothing.

If you are talking 4WD, do they both have planetary gear fronts? Never would buy another 4WD without planetary fronts, I have broken 3 front axles on our compact 4WD.

I guess we made a decision. My wife and also partner and I sat down and made a pros/cons list. The only clear winner was the Kubota on a long term financial plan. The buy out on the JD at 5 years is $40k and the buy out at the end of 6 yrs on the bigger Kubota is $25k. That being said I'll be 44 at the end of this month and I'm not sure at this point if any of the kids will be taking over the farm or not. Lets say in 5 years we had the JD ready to go back or buy out our payments per month will go way up either because we bought it out at 40k or we let it go back and leased another one. Now on the Kubota at 23k,if we bought it out our payments would actually drop over 50/mo vs going up 200/mo to buy the Deere. So in 5 years I'll be 49 and getting close to the end of my I'm the head guy milking cows career and if we lease than buy the Kubota we'll save money if its any where's near as good as the last 8200 we ran for 15 years and the 2 other 8200's we had besides that one. Thank you all for all the knowledgeable information, it wasn't a simple clear cut decision until my wife reminded me of my age and uncertainty of the future of our farm.
