It's all about the engine, hyd pump, and transmission. Why is he selling it, get a bigger one, moving, or did it go bad and he's unloading it?

Sure looks like a little loving care could make it worth a little more on the outside, if the insides are good.

A good loader alone is worth about half that, so it can't hurt you too bad?

While I am not familiar with this particular model, it appears to be a industrial loader vs a agricultural tractor. The industrial tractors often are just a bit tougher version of ag tractors. Many have a shuttle shift for forward/reverse. And a higher volume hydraulic pump, making for a stronger loader. Look and see if the hydraulic pump is driven off the end of the crankshaft, this can indicate a higher volume pump, than most ag built tractors. Front axle and loaders tend to be heavier on industrial models as well.

Have you seen it in person?

Will he let you test drive it?

It looks to have been used pretty hard, but then it is 50+ years old. I would expect it to have some problems.

I would look it over closely for major deal killers, like structural failures in the front end, the loader itself and attachment points, freeze cracked block, transmission, etc.

Check the oil for water, the radiator for oil, rusty coolant, or no coolant, crankcase blow-by. These items are repairable but are useful for negotiation.

I would consider that price to be for a ready to work tractor.

For that kind of money can get a Case 580-480 with a torque converter and hyd shuttle. Can get almost everything for them aftermarket.

My Brother-in-Law had a 2404 loader tractor just like that one minus the cab. Only IH tractor by Brother-in-law or his Dad and all his relation ever had. It was his loader tractor for 4-5 years. His had a square block of concrete hanging off the 3-pt for better traction, and to offset the loader. I don't think his loader bucket was that big. He eventually bought a Gehl skid-steer and got rid of the 2404.

Only problem he ever had with it was in the fall he'd drop the concrete block so he could use the pto to fill his two grain bins with the auger. One morning he's getting ready to combine, pulled the dipstick on the engine and got it crooked or something and the end piece where the hash marks were broke off and fell into the oil pan. Quick run 15 miles to town, new dipstick, new pan gasket, and some gasket dressing, and 6 quarts of oil and a filter. Drain the pan and remove it. There's FOUR ends of dipsticks in the pan! He dressed up the gasket, put the pan back on, changed the filter, put the oil in and hooked the 2404 up to the auger. Then went combining! It's normal job was hog chores

The 2404 compares to a 420/430 Case loader tractor, think they all had forward/reverse shuttle shift. For certain things the torque converter drive is nice, like when crowding the bucket to make sure it's 110% full, but most times that just makes a mess stopping and turning with the too full bucket.

Look the 2404 over good, frt axle, loader arms & bucket, for cracks & repairs. Bet there isn't any.

For that kind of money it should be in really good mechanical condition, those old IH Industrial tractors aren't real hot sellers and its not that big about the same as the IH 404 farm
tractor.

Thanks for all the tips so far, keep them coming. The owner told me over the phone that he?s owned it 4 years, was a project tractor when he got it, had been sitting up a while, rebuilt carburetor and fuel tank replaced, rear wheels were rusted through so he got another set of wheels and tires off an old combine and put on it, said the seat is worn out but there are no oil leaks or hydraulic leaks anywhere. I?m just thinking it over for now, really don?t want to put no more than $3500 in it
