Came across this today. Ive been in some high stress situations, but nothing close to this. I like to think I could have handled the aircraft, but there is no chance I could have done it with this much calm. This is an excellent example of professionalism and speaks well of both airline pilots and the military that trained this woman.

I couldn't imagine how hard that thing would be to fly with one engine. the thing I don't understand is why they would not got to a channel where she was the only one talking to the controller, had me confused couple times with the other traffic on the radio.

I don't remember how that all works anymore. But she never did declare an emergency, she said she was one engine. Take that with her extreme calm and traffic control may not have understood the situation til she said she had parts missing.

You're right. I never heard an emergency declared but the controllers were referring to it as an 'emergency aircraft' meaning they got priority handling.

When I was in the Navy it was routine during practice to shut down an engine like it was shot out. If your in combat you can't say time out, or your in the middle of the ocean and say I think I will just land over here.

Full blow professional. So blasted many women start screaming and wizzing their undies. She had chilled water pumping and after landing went back and hugged the passengers. Just like skully on the Hudson river. I really hate people who loose it. They are the ones that can turn an emergency into a total cluster type situation. Wonder if a movie or mini drama will be made? Give them about 6 to 8 months. Great reflection of a professional trained and the garbage weeded out. Well done!!!! If the block on my garden tractor looked like this after throwing a rod at 32k feet.

I suspect that as many men would be screaming and wizzing their undies ...... it's not the exclusive right of the ladies to do that. Nobody here at YT of course, we're all brave macho guys ..... but you know, all those other guys who don't own tractors and stuff like that and live in cities and drive BMW's right?

You mean the guys who scream like little girls. There was a guy that worked at a place many years ago. Big bad dude that could hand out the crap untill a rat ran through the kitchen. You should have heard his super ultra sonic f sharp scream! Did not say all women but you watch videos of situations where things go bad and you tell us what you hear. Please.

Read where she had to make a decision instantly to descend the aircraft to oxygen available altitude since all the passengers were on oxygen masks after the window hole sucked all the air out. One report said she immediately made a 41 degree left turn and dive, descending at 4000 ft per minute getting to 14-15,000 ft quickly where atmosphere oxygen would soon becomes available. She had to know the maximum speed of safe descent of the 737 and not break up the aircraft while descending and leveling out. She either was doing this while on the radio or had already descended to 14,000 before calling ATC on the radio. She asked ATC "can we have the trucks out for this one" early on. She was preparing for fire upon landing or possible crash land at any time.

Except of course Chesley Sullenberger. Not to diminish the feat of this female pilot but the 737 can fly on 1 engine and also land. What sullenberger did was a real feat of flying.

I assume they stayed on that channel so the other planes in the vicinity were aware of what was going on. The ATC did redirect a couple of them.

It certainly was, beyond comprehension, but one thing contributed heavily, the Hudson River was like glass on the surface, totally calm. That stretch of water all the way through the englewood cliffs can be quite the opposite. I have experienced same while navigating this stretch in a 23' boat, it can be treacherous with whitecaps, near the cliffs is even much worse. Sully made the right call and made it happen.

I once talk to a Stewardess that worked with Sully, she said he's a wonderful Captain, she said he made you feel equal and everyone worked together, she said I was proud to serve with him

As I said, its been a long time, but i believe you have to say " I'm declaring an emergency" for it to be taken to that level. I've heard other recordings too and it is not uncommon for pilo t's in that situation to forget and sometimes air traffic control will ask if they are declaring an emergency. Otherwise it stau s at a lower level.

She was trained as a military pilot that may have to one day leave her aircraft with a blast from her ejection seat to land in a hostel place where there would not be a welcome wagon waiting for her.

No doubt she did a great job.....just like she was trained to do. I think it is a bit much that all of the attention has been thrown to her yet there WAS another qualified 737 pilot right beside her doing what he was trained to do. Typically when one pilot is on the radio the other one has hands on the fight controls and throttles. At least that was how American trained me. I wasn't there but it was a crew effort, used to be called CRM, Crew Resource Management and it is taken very seriously. I tip my hat to Both of them!

They created a drink in his honor, the Sully. Two hits of grey goose, and a splash of water.
He came out to pay tribute to Cpt Schults. Both good pilots. Thank GOD we have men and women like them.

(quoted from post at 16:23:05 04/20/18) . One report said she immediately made a 41 degree left turn and dive, .

If you have to dive, you have to turn to get out of the airway to clear any traffic below you that may be coming or going.
