TD6 mag again

Played with the TD 6 a little tonight. It tries to start but never quite takes off. I checked spark at the coil wire. It's yellow and jumps about 1/4 inch maybe. Found some kits with points, condenser, cap and rotor. And another one with new coil..what do you all think? Linkage seems ok and I cleaned the carb but I'm not ruling them out either.

One way to see if it is spark related is to use the points in the Mag as a trigger and the mag cap as a distributor. Use a coil from a different vehicle. Remove the
internal mag connection to the points, and use the former grounding (kill wire) terminal for a connection from the new coil to ground. Use a spare condenser from
anything (also connected to the same coil terminal (that matches the ground of the battery) supply battery voltage to the coil through a normal on off switch from the
non grounded side of the battery. Put the high voltage coil wire into the coil and the center of the cap. If it runs now, either leave it, or fix the mag, but you know
what the issue is. They often need a solid choking to get them to fire. Black smoke and all at first. Jim

Thanks Jim. I photo copied that. Might have to give it a thought.
I had another thought after I posted. I pulled the oil bath off and it was overfull.Im going to let it drip tonight and refill it tomorrow. Maybe it's sucking water mixed with oil up?

have you cleaned the points? that is the most common problem in the mag. new points will solve nothing. if contacts are clean and flat or even filed flat and gapped properly and still no spark then continue, as it could be the condenser. never saw a used set of points not make an engine run.

It has spark. Just seems weak. When I tear it apart I want to have parts on hand.

Over the years the magnets will loose potency (? correct term?). Rejuvenating the magnets was one of the things done during the repair of one of my mags.

F.....in dozer. We have a love hate relationship. If we didn't have memories I think I would roll it in the creek.
I put the oil bath back on and it started right up. I turn the gas off and let it run out. Put everything back together. Put some fresh gas in. Now it just sputters and pops. It's a moody beach! Always needs something.
