How do you turn the crank to adjust the valves using the "TDC"
mark. I tried engaging the PTO and using a pipe wrench to turn the PTO shaft. I took the tractor out of Gear, but when I turn the PTO the tractor tries to move like it is engaged??
I'm following the manual, but it doesn't give me any direction as to how I turn the motor to line up the TDC mark on the flywheel to set the valve tappets? I'm not a mechanic, but can follow instructions.
 
You can usually turn the motor over by putting pressure on the belt and turning the fan, or turn the crankshaft nut with a breaker bar.

I know this sounds stupid but which way Clockwise or Counter clockwise? Is the crank nut on the front?
 
If it is a continental engine, go to the right side facing forward get a box end wrench that fits the crank shaft pulley put it on the crank nut and pull the wrench up. Line the distributor rotor with the number 1 cylinder on the compression stroke. Take the number 1 plug out and hold your finger over the hole to find the compression stroke. You will need an assistant.
 
Clockwise/counterclockwise is the direction the crank pulley is turning as viewed from the front.

The easiest way to turn the engine through is pull the plugs, tighten the alt belt, turn it by the fan or the alt nut.

Hint, you can adjust the lifters by the procedure in the manual. But before putting the cover back on, and the gas tank, start it up and listen. It will run a while on gas in the carb. If any are ticking, stick the feeler gauge in with it running until you find the loose one, recheck it.
 
I push on the slack side of the fan belt, then turn the fan clockwise. Another way is with a socket on the generator or alternator, turn and push on the belt slack side.
 
Same procedure, but going to be very difficult to hand turn against the compression.

You can remove the injectors, but a lot of extra work.

Or very slightly pry open a valve on which ever cylinder is coming up on compression. Pry down on the rocker arm while turning the engine, don't open the valve any more than just enough to break the seal, otherwise the piston will hit the valve.

Another option, pull the starter, pry against the flywheel gear.

Thanks for the input. Never done this before but . Got the head done / got the radiator done / got the injectors done - worried though about all the water in the oil when I drained it - hope it’s not ruined?? But thanks for your help????
