Gas start diesel ignition conversion

I have a td6 that is hard starting and also hard to switch back to gas. Has anyone replaced the mag with a distributor or converted to a regular coil?

I am not sure if there is enough room in that area -- first ya need the drive then the dist.and cap -- that would be My first thought -- Roy

I have the distributor off an A. Looks like it may work if the drive is the same. Seems they have a different rotation but I don't know if that will make a difference.

Just had another thought -- maybe the upright drive with a delco dist. would fit in there if the IH one wont --Roy

The TD-6 magneto (or distributor) run in the opposite direction to a t-6 or Farmall M, could use a magneto or distributor off a Farmall MD.

Looks like it will fit. I won't have time to work on it for a bit but wanted to see if anyone on here did it. Sure would be easier to tune up.

May not be the problem but yes a Distributor from other gas start diesels will work and bolt on where the mag is. They have very little or no advance and turn a different direction than the A through 450 gas tractors. Need to run a power wire to coil with a on off switch and remember to shut off electric power to coil after switch to diesel. Or change to a distributor type manifold with working electrical switching parts. IH also made distributor change over packages for MD tractors a long time ago.
Don't know if you could block the advance in a gas distributor and get it to work right. Breaker plate is different in the gas starts so the points rubbing block contacts cam the same way as it would in like a SM distributor.

If nothing between oil fill and oil fill is no bigger than picture should have room. Gas distributors that work on 9 series gas, 600 and 650 work if the advance is limited in them. They turn the same direction as the TD6.

Mag still works but not sure if it's putting out enough spark. I think a distributor would be easier to work on and hoping for hotter spark.

definitly makes a difference. need correct rotation from a diesel unit. lots easier to fix the mag. probably just needs points looked at and cleaned and adjusted. no need to switch back to gas once engine is running on diesel.

As stated the distributors on the Diesel Internationals rotate opposite of a regular distributor. Have you checked that the spark plug wires are correct on the distributor cap? I bought a WD9 that was hard starting on gas. I did a bit of trouble shooting and found wires 3 and 4 were crossed. Wow what a difference that made. This wiring problem must have been going on for a long, long time. The past owner had welded a pipe fitting on the intake manifold so he could shoot starting fluid into the engine with out taking the air filter hose off.

Firing order is good. It usually starts on 2-3 cylinders and then kicks to 4. When it runs good it runs real good. My thoughts are that the plugs are gumming up. I really need to pull the hood and check everything. I just thought if this distributor I have would work I would try it. Since it won't I will probably just tune it. I have had the carb and intake apart. Plugs and wires are fairly new. I hate working on mags as the points are kind of a pain but I guess that's next.

Solid state ignition system with an inductive pickup at the flywheel or crank balancer. Simple to change spark timing for starting and advance with RPMs.

Unless you want to be difficult or need to be exotic, simply fix the mag. You can replace the points, condenser, and coil for less than any quality distributor conversion.

But that ain't gonna fix the "hard to switch back to gas" issue, whatever that may be.
