I read it each week,it comes to my house on Saturday morning. One thing that caught my attention was the price of butcher size hogs at the New Holland sale barn,The paper said they were bringing 38 to 45 cents per lb. I remember when my dad raised them in NJ.A few times,,many years ago,,he got as much as 50 cents a lb,,way back then.38 to 45 cents now is way low to my thinking,,,I havent been involved in any thing like it for years,,but is my thinking correct??

One more thing I took note of was the price of goats,,,,Traditional Farmer mentioned it a few times,,so I did look at the sale results,,,goats of all sizes were bringing what seemed like very high prices compared to other livestock. This is just my 02 cents,,Im no expert at all,,just reading and keeping interest.

Larry, If you compare that to chicken, witch is lower? I no sometime in the market pork is less than chicken.

I wonder how many hogs are sold through that barn Larry? Does it say? I checked all the United Producer sale barns here in Michigan and none of them even list hogs. That surprised me. I guess most are direct marketed. One did list sheep and goats. Those prices were right up there, just like you said.

Was it a decade ago hogs were 8 to 9 cents a lb?

40 cent hogs is pretty good, it's when they get to 30 cents or less.

All Ag products, we have to improve yield/ efficiency because the prices really haven't gone up in decades. There are roller coaster ups and down for sure, but trebdline tends to be less than inflation over the long haul.

Poultry and hogs have mostly all gone to contracts; vertical integration.

Dairy appears to be in the middle of converting to that.

With most of production under contract, the open market becomes unpredictable and generally low.

Imagine also how long it would take to get that hog from a little tyke to 200 lbs. Then, how long would it take to have a couple dozen chicks ready to butcher? Seems to me there's much more money in chicken.

The rule of thumb way back when I started farming was that feed cost was the equivalent of 13 bushels of corn to get a hog to market. So at $3.50 corn you have a $45.50 in corn in each hog. Or another way to look at it is you would be getting nearly $7.00 for your corn. That assumes labor cost of $0.00 which is what many of us are used to anyway. :)

The paper says 584 hogs total//barrows and gilts 200 to 300 lbs 52to 56 percent lean,,85 head 38 to 45 cents....//7 head 200 to 300 lbs 40 to 61 cents///10 head 300 to 350 lbs 40 to 48 cents///129 head 32 to 39/// 6 head of boars between 400 to 800 lbs bought 5 to 8 cents per pound,,sows bought 26 to 34 cents

By the way,it in my opinion is a great paper,,lots of good reading,,even for the girls..lots of recipes etc,,,lots of good reading about farming,,classified adds,,etc,,,49 dollars per year delivered every week.It also entitles subscribers to some free classified adds.It covers many states and a wide variety of stuff.Auction listings,,and real estate too.

We've got The Farmers Advance here in Michigan. Same kind of deal, but it get's thinner all the time. Those two editions that you sent to me were enough reading to last a week, that's for sure.

And goats are usually at the cheapest in late Spring and Summer.I look in LF yesterday and saw the large bucks were over $3 lb,bringing more than anything else that's unusual.

Only my opinion, but I think many of those 5-8 cent boars are used in pepperoni .

Just looked online..... $2.28 for 3.5 ounces of pepperoni . So that is $10.42 per pound .

So let's go buy a 400 lb. boar for 8 cents a pound (32 bucks), say he dresses out at 70% (280 lbs. hanging weight), then say there is another 50 lbs. of bone waste. That leaves 230 pounds of boar meat that cost us 32 bucks. Now that boar meat left is at 14 cents per pound.

Do you think we could pay the butchering bill and processing costs and still make some cash ? Surely we could turn that boar into pepperoni for 600 bucks don't you think ?

Now we've spent 632 bucks on that old boar. Let's sell him for pepperoni ! 230 x $10.42 = $2396 , subtract our 632 , and we just made 1764 bucks on that old boar free and clear.

I agree with you Larry, Lancaster Farming Newspaper has something for everyone. I use their free mailbox market ads and sell everything I ever post.......still get calls months after listing to see if an item is still for sale.
That paper has a heck of a circulation area.
