We have a 41 A Farmall. Replaced the 6v starter due to back plate blowing out from 12v.

What type of improvements or changes to the wiring can be done to prevent this from happening again?

You ask "What type of improvements or changes to the wiring can be done to prevent this from happening again"

I take it you're using a 6 volt starter operated at 12 volts, right ??????????????

If so here are a few things that may help:

1) Use a smaller light duty low CCA 12 volt battery NOT any big honkin high CCA unit.
2) Instead of the normal bigger is better battery cables, USE LIGHT GAUGE BATTERY CABLES like maybe No 4
3) Some IHC starter drives can be replaced with a modern one that withstands the harsh high torque engagement

4) Have a shop convert the starter over to 12 volts orrrrrrrrr

5) Buy a 12 volt starter

6) Go back to 6 volts

I'm sure others can add to this and have other suggestions but these are a few off the top of my head

I had the starter rear cover blow out on my Super M shortly after I converted it to 12 volts.

Took the busted cover to the local starter/alternator shop - they sold me a cast iron replacement (the original was cast pot metal). The new cover has worked fine for 10+ years.

Just want to add: endplay on the armature plays a part. when the Bendix slams into the ring gear the shock goes to the other end of the
armature shaft and if there is any clearance much it is like a hammer blow right in the center of the brush plate. Starter shops can add
shims to the shaft to take up the end play.
