deer plot?...

I have a surplus of garden seed that was given to me. I already took out what I needed for my garden and I am left with about 2-3lbs of peas. About 25 packets of lettuce and 25 packets of radishes. As well as other veggies. Wondering if working up a patch of ground and broadcast seeding it mixed together would work for a deer plot. I already gave away some of it but I'm' still left with alot. I figure the deer would probably eat it off before mature anyway. Ideas?

Sounds like an idea deer mix, getting it thin enough and not covering it too much is always my problem with those small seed.

Can?t see why not I?ve drilled peas before and they
neighbor drills what he calls a salad mix it has all
kinds of different seeds like that and grazes cows
on it in the fall . I?ve always wondered after
watching north woods law how do you plant a food
plot ? Don?t they look at that like baiting deer? I
don?t know I?m just asking I know it?s tv but they
went on to an old guys place and was hassling him
for putting apples out for the deer .

Right now, in this location, they'd clean anything off that sprouted up. Grass is just turning a bit green, but still on hold due to sustained cold temperatures. It would end up a patch of weeds. Better to wait as their browse increases, less chance of it never getting a start.

You could work the area up, make sure soil is fertile, broadcast oats, disc those in, then depending on what you have for implements, sow the smaller seed on top with less cover.

I typically use oats for quick/easy growing grass with small seed mixes, kind of like we planted hay grasses. Maybe thicken up the mix with some grass or clover seed. I prefer a heavy population for a plot just to deal with weeds. Correct PH, and with as fertile of soil as one can make with what they have, can afford, results are usually satisfactory. With minimal fuss and some cooperation of the weather, you might just outpace the weeds and have something established for a season or longer. Cage off a section, see how much is grazed. Geese always get to my one plot, going to try a diversion patch closer to their pond.

I could also plant peas seperate. I'm just looking for ideas to burn up surplus seed. As for food plots. Is grass bait? If so better make sure you shoot that deer on a bare spot of ground. Its complicated but the way I understand it you can not throw anything out for the deer the shoot them there. But if certain vegetation should happen to already be there its fine. I've known people who bait deer along a established trail then set up a stand between said bait and desireable spot ( cover, water, etc.) although I'll admit this is pushing one's luck.

Check the laws in your state. In NY it is legal to have food plots, also legal to cut and leave branches for them. If you place corn, apples, etc., and sit in a stand over the area, it's illegal. If I recall, one reason is leaving piles of grain etc. is a method of spreading disease. Past October and archery season, plots may or may not be less than desirable to them, at that point it might still be part of their daily pattern, but less of a draw than when the growth is most desirable. Most of it will tan out by that time anyway.
