18.4.38 tires

18.4 will be taller. I checked that on a 18.4X30 stand beside a 16.9X30 and the 18.4 is a good bit taller

Thanks. I just did some looking and it looks like the tire I have which is actually a 480/80/38 is 69 inches and the 16.9 is about 67 . So it would probably be about like when my 4020 came from the factory with 15.5.38 inner and 13.6.38 outer duals.

The only tire that I know of that does not follow that convention is the 15.5, it is a low profile, about same height as 13.6, just wider version.

It depends on the brand. I put on a lot of Goodyear 16.9x38's that were as tall as their 18.4x38's, just a bit narrower. I do not know how they stand up now that Titan is building them.

David, is that recent? I had a pair of low pro 15.5s maybe ten years ago that were very old at the time, and the replacements were a lot bigger diameter.

No. I,m sitting here eating breakfast and looking out the window at two tractors(706 and 1256) sitting side by side. One has 16.9x38,the other had 18.4x38.Both are Firestone 'traction field and road'.The 16.9 is several inches shorter in height.

(quoted from post at 06:38:07 04/16/18) No. I had a JD 4020 and the PO had 16.9s on it which were worn out and I replaced with the standard 18.4.

My dad owned a 1969 4020 that came from the factory with 16.9x38s.

No. Big difference. The one with the duals has 18.4s,the singles are 16.9s.

That?s a nice pair of whites . I planted corn with a 2 135 last year it took till the end of the field to figure out the shift pattern but it was a nice tractor

I?ve got 6 15.5.38 and several 13.6.38 and none are
the same height . The pair of 13.6.38 I just took off
one Is way wider then the other

You can "cheat" a bias ply tire quite a bit with different rim widths - had a Case once with 18.4-34's on the inside on wide rims, 16.9 duals on narrow rims and they were virtually the same height - but the 16.9s were way narrower. I can't for the life of me remember what the rim widths were, though. Common practice up here years ago was to have the rim widened by a couple inches, putting more tire face on the ground. Not sure it really helped a lot, maybe just made you feel better......
