Oil pan torque value, ford 4630

I have a 1997 4x4 diesel ford 4630,I'm
replacing the oil pan can't find a torque
value anywhere. It has the 201 3cyl turbo
diesel what has me scratching my head is
the front and rear of the block are
aluminium and side walls are cast. I've
never seen and steel pan to aluminum over
20flbs so . The cast I would need to be 20
to 30flbs ????so where does that leave me

On things like that there is no torque value as such. There is a torque spec for the bolt size it self but not for that application. Valve cover etc. are also the same and have no set torque spec

I've been doing mechanic work for over 50 years and I can't say I have ever torqued an oil pan. I have rebuilt dozens of 201s. I torque the mains- rods- head, flywheel bolts and that's about it. It is a matter of feel. I tighten the oil pan bolts with a short 1/4 in drive ratchet and have never had a problem. I am sure there is a torque spec somewhere but never took the time to look one up.

I don't know what the torque is for the oil pan bolts on that engine, but to say that they don't tend to have a specified for oil pan bolts and tappet cover bolts is rubbish. To say that it isn't as critical as the torque for conn. rod bolts is true, but most engines still have a torque. And with that all said, there are applications where torque for oil pan bolts is very important, such as the oil pan bolts for the Case-IH MX Magnum with the 8.3L Cummins.

I agree that it's not critical but there is a torque spec. Going by the bolt spec will prob work on older engines. I have build 100s of test engines and every bolt gets torqued.

post the bolt size. presume its metric. if its small bolts like 1/4" or 10mm. they go by inch pounds not foot lbs. its not a critical thing but if you where in a mechanic's class they would be torqued and there is a torque. most important is tightening evenly going over them 2 or three times a bit at a time. like the old chevy cork valve cover gaskets.

The torque OP posted is correct for them engines. 18-20 for steel pan,20-30 for cast pan. 3/8-18 bolt torques within them parimeters.
