More Jerseys

Not sure how we talked ourselves into this
again, but we now have 5 4 day olds jersey
calves along with the first one we got back
in Feb.

We we're supposed to be getting 5 bulls,
but shortly after getting them home
realized one is a heifer. Not sure what to
do with it now, Just raise it along with
the soon to be steers? Would it be worth
any more or less then a steer if I try to
sell it off or something?

Rrlund needs to keep telling me to stay
inside and watch TV instead of taking on
more cows, lol!

Where did you get her.
If a dairy sold her to you with bulls it is a good chance she is a twin to a bull and sterile.

If you bought her at a auction and just did not notice she was female when you bid raise her up; feed her well; AI her and sell as a springer.

Then call the farmer and explain your situation.
If he gave you the heifer by mistake it will go a long way with future dealings with him.
If he gave you the heifer because she was a twin to a bull you will know she is basically a steer that will not grow as fast as a true steer.

Those calves look healthy. There is just one major problem with Jersey and Jersey cross breed calves, they are not worth much because by the time you feed them out you will have more in them than they will be worth. Even a heifer is not real valuable right now with low diary prices.

Find some beef crossed calves, even if they are Holstein/beef crosses. These will feed out better and will have some value when your done.

A guy over at one of the local livestock markets was telling me some of the dairy farmers have been dumping the heifer calves right a long with the bull calves the last few months.Guess they figure they aren't going to need any replacements?
