So since it has been a nice day today as in in the 60s I go a chance to do a bit to the old thing. Put in new plugs and tried to fire it up. It now runs on less choke but still not as good as it should since if I in-choke it completely it dies. But at least if does not need as much choke as it did before.
I also did a dip stick fuel check to see how much gas it has and on the stick it may have been all of 4 inches so if it has any bad gas in it there is very little since I have put in at least 12 gal of fresh gas.
But he bad thing was the one 235/75R16 I had mounted on it was flat so had to take the tire off and pull the tube and find what was wrong. Tube had a hole in it so I checked the tire and sure enough it had a nail in it. Guess I should have checked that before I had put the tube in. LOL
 
You can always throw a can of HEAT drygas and a can of Sea Foam in the tank. The two together can almost perform miracles. Little drops of water in the bottom of the carb bowls and the sea foam cleans out gunk. Try it.
 
No, just curious, would not be the original engine I believe. I had a 65 wrecker I could not remember if it was a 312 or 292 or what.
 

I once had a gas tractor with similar symptoms and it turned out to be bad ignition switch. That tractor also ate points and condensors. I guess you have tried letting the tractor run long enough to get warmed up and hot.

if this thing has been sitting, have you checked air intake and exhaust outlet for a rodent's backup food supply ??
 
This is the engine that came in it when new. Missouri state conservation truck at one time. So it is a state fleet truck. Back when my dad got it there where 5 or 6 up for bid and he got 3 or 4th bid so he got 3rd or 4th choice on the trucks. All had the 300 straight 6 wit h4 speed. Original miles on it are 80,898.
 
A couple of things here to look at, (1) look the cap over and make sure that it is not corroded , (2) run and Ohom check on th4e wires as i do believe that will have the carbon core wires , (3) And due to the amount of choke you are having to use i do believe that that carb needsw to take a long HOT BATH in some good OLD CARB cleaner because you are not getting fuel flow thru the main jetting and due to it setting for god only knows for how long the accelerator pump is toast . Now i can not see in my old mind the insides of that carb due to it's age and mine so i can not remember if that one had a power valve or not . What i think your getting is with the choke on you are pulling fuel from the bowl overflow and Not thru the jet.
 
I have had those carbs apart and they are fairly simple. My first impulse however, would be to make sure fire is consistent. I usually pull coil wire out of the top of the distributer and turn the engine over, that sometimes requires help, but set the end of the coil wire close to the engine and make sure it has regular fire. You can pull the plugs individually and do similar. I like to start with the spark, because if you take the carb apart first and tear the gasket you wind up buying a kit. Could also be a valve not seating if it has been sitting there open for a long time. 80,000 odd miles should still be a good motor.
 
Spark is good and the points where replaced a year or so ago but it has not been run but an hour or 2 on new points. Carb was rebuilt last year also but again it has sat a year
 
Spark is in fact good. Compression is good. Intake vacuum if very good. Most likely in the carb but it has been slowly getting better and the hand over the carb while running trick yesterday did help a whole lot
