Senior Moment Again!

Putting the head on a Ford 850 gas tractor with 7/16" head bolts. I thought I read 100 - 105 lbs of torque. I got all the bolts torqued down and I read the specs again. THE SPECS WERE FOR A DIESEL. The gas was supposed to be 60-65 lbs of torque. My question is should I take the head off again and get new head bolts? I probably stretched the bolts. Will the head gasket still be good? I noticed the mistake right after installing the head. These Senior moments seem to be happening more often.

I'd think the head could stay on of you do this, loosen all bolts now to 50 FT/LB. Then replace each bolt and torque to 50. When all are in place do the final torque you want. What size are the bolts now? If 1/2 inch I'd leave it as is.

You have nothing to gain by changing it in any way. Run it. If it leaks, then change it. If it does not, all is well. Jim

Well, since you are over torqued by double, I would be in favor of replacing the bolts one at a time and torqueing them to the proper value. That much excess torque could potentially damage the block if left and run that way. Or, worse, could cause a bolt to snap and blow a head gasket.

Do it right so that you only have to do it once. My opinion.

kc we have all made those mistakes, your post says 7/16 head bolts, being under 1/2" that might be to high to leave as is, as others have said loosen to 50 lbs, change them out 1 at a time, torqueing to 50 lbs, and then take them up to 60 then 65 for final torque.
