what hydraulic oil to use

The book says to use Case TCH oil in the torque tube of my Case 580B backhoe & I'm wondering if the Cam 303 hydraulic oil from Rural King or what hydraulic oil is comparable to use. I asked down on the Case forum but so far haven't gotten an answer. Keith

That is what we have been putting into a friends 580B for years up till Missouri stopped letting it be sold here

When I worked as a parts man at the Case Underground dealer (trenchers, directional boring, etc., now part of Toro) many of the older machines spec'd TCH. What Case told us to use was Hy-Tran Ultra. You can use after market oil as long as it says it meets the Hy-tran spec. The way CHN's (Case/new Holland, both AG and CE) oil supplier explained it at one of the training sessions, was the after market oil meets the specs when you pour it in, the OEM oil additive package is designed so the the oil still meets the spec at drain interval.

Thanks Old, I was pretty sure it would be OK but thought I'd better ask. I probably need to change it since it's been awhile. Keith

Hi, I have a CAT tlb and when I enquired at Cat dealer for spec tranny oil is was beyond ridiculous price wise. So I went to the bulk oil dealer here and he showed me their oil of exact same spec for about 1/4 cost. He said all the cat owners use it. I changed mine and the filter. Maybe you can check that. You can go one notch better than 303 and get a premium hydraulic oil thst meets the hy Tran spec it?s a couple dollars more than the 303 per five gallon

Case tch is the same as Mobil 424 or the universal tractor hydraulic oil that meets these spec. This is what we use in these machines at the dealer everyday

If you're purist and believe in following your owner's manual use the TCH oil from your local Case Dealer. Won't be any more expensive than the "will work" oils. My Case dealer told me to never use Hy-Tran Oil where TCH oil is spec'd. Our old Case 1030 gets TCH oil. I'm sure the brain trust will totally disagree but it's still a free country. So you can do what you want.
