Getting the lawn mower out I see the hood has a crack about 5 inches long. What I do I need to repair this? Materials Information, etc. Thanks for any and all help. J.

Is it really fiberglass and not plastic?

If fiberglass, depends on how you want to fix it. You could epoxy a piece of sheet metal to the back. Or you could rough it up, get some resin and catalyst and some chopped stand mat and basically reinforce the crack.

If it's either fiberglass or painted plastic take a disc sander with coarse paper and grind the paint off of it to a depth of about 1/32". Then if it's fiberglass cut a couple pieces of fiberglass cloth and apply it over the break with some fiberglass resin. You can immediately lay a second layer of cloth over the top if you are fast enough. It doesn't take but a couple minutes for the resin to set up. Once dry fill the rest with bondo, sand it and re-paint it. if you don't get the second layer on it when dry, just scuff sand it a apply the cloth with some fresh resin.

If it's plastic cut a couple pieces of fiberglass cloth and apply it over the break with epoxy for plastic. Again you can lay a second layer of cloth if you are fast enough. Then instead of filling with bondo do any filling with epoxy for plastic. It can be sanded and painted after it dries. If you are so equipped it helps to hold the break together to plastic weld it prior to putting the epoxy patch on.

Dunno what you're "running", but I'll bet you could find a decent used hood on fleabay that would be almost reasonable after factoring in the cost of a fiberglas or plastic repair kit and lots of time and aggravation.

If it is plastic then get the epoxy that they used to repair plastic bumpers. Then repair it on the inside. I usually "V" the crack a little in the back side. Apply the epoxy and put fiber glass mess into that layer of epoxy and then put more epoxy over the mesh. Smooth the epoxy out while working it into the mesh. The hood will still show the crack on the out side but it will stop it. Most of the time the crack will be closed to where you really can not see it.

Fiberglass repair kits are not the correct thing to use. They will not stick correctly.

another option, see if your local auto body shop has a nitrogen plastic welder. they can hot staple and plastic weld the crack shut. permanent repair. a couple pizzas or a 3 ft sub sammich for the shop may git r done on the side!!!

Did you ever see where an ATV fender is put back together with ty-wraps . Ugly but not a bad repair . A series of holes is needed to lace the ty-wraps.
