New Holland LS 170 Skidloader drive problems

I have a New Holland LS 170 skidloader and it has recently developed a problem. When I drive it the steering is unresponsive. If I try to turn it will "free wheel" making a clicking noise they it will suddenly turn. I was thinking I needed to adjust the drive chains. Am I correct in my thinking? If so how do I do that? I assume take of the wheels and open the access panel on the side.

Any help would be great.

It does sound like drive chains, but also sounds like stripped or badly worn sprockets.

Not sure about the New Holland, but Bobcat has a cover on top.

Yeah sounds like chains/sproket issue. We have just about the same machine. John Deere 6675 that was made by New Holland. There should also be a tensioner in there for a he chains. Maybe fell apart ?

The adjustment is by sliding the hubs away from the center line. Here is a link to the parts page showing the final drive. If the chains have been let go long enough to strip the sprockets you'll probably have to gut and feather the cases. https://partstore.agriculture.newholland.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr317572ar246776
