Whats the best option out of this? Engine is stuck hard. There was an open exh stack and sitting for 3 years. Pretty sure stuck pistons or rings or both. Options and associated cost?

Did you check the oil pan for water?? If water got to the pan its toast. Crank and everything down there will be rusty rusty. Head will probably be cracked if freezing temps where you are, possibly the block also. There are lots of WD's around find a candidate that's running. Just my experience. gobble

That would be an engine from a Gleaner Combine...a somewhat preferred engine for tractor pulling..

Fits with just a few alterations..

I got 2 quotes on a Gleaner E engine for my now destroyed D17. For the $1500 they wanted, you could build the WD engine back up pretty well. For a direct swap go with a WC, WD, or WD45. ZERO mods needed for those engines.

I haven't been in the bottom end yet, but pretty sure it's wet. I still don't know if the Gleaner engine is a 4 cyl, or 6 or what. I'm likely gonna find a WD45 and toss in there. I've got the rest of the rig the way I like it.

Any other good ideas, I'm listening.

One thing I'm concerned about is if I go hunting the tractor breaker yards for a motor, I may wind up in the same basic place I am now. Will need to open the bottom end at least and check for rust and crud.

sigh,,,

Being a wet sleeve engine the best way to fix it is install new sleeves and pistons and rings. Ya you will have more in it then you could sell it for but you will have a new engine that will out last you

The Gleaner E engine that guys are recommending is a 4 cyl 226 that is basically the newer version of your WD engine. As I said, the $1500 I was quoted for one out of 2 salvage yards would be more than the cost of building your engine up new. It would be cheaper to find a running WD and swap the engines out, then sell the rest of the WD parts and maybe come out ahead.

What do you know about it before it was parked? Dad bought a tractor one time thinking it was just stuck, but there was a bent rod and the piston came down so far that the oil ring expanded under the sleeve and it wouldn't come up,so that's why it was parked in the first place. Not saying that's what's going on,but if you don't know for sure,it could have had a spun bearing or something so it was stuck before it was parked.

Doc two options I see 1. find running engine and drop in. 2. What old said tear down and rebuild. BUT GET TO BARE BLOCK AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO CRACKS!!!

Gleaner E engine is a 226, same as a WD45. Yard price of $1500 is nuts- can usually find them for $3-500.

I got an email from one breaker yard. They have a WD45 will sell as is for $650. Delivery to me on pallet would be another $240. I asked if they will do a compression test, and they said no, but they will guarantee it runs, for 30 days. I tried to talk him down some, but he wasn't interested in dealing.

If anyone can point me to this Gleaner E engine, I'll try to get that.

I got another offer $800 delivered to me. I can see why breakers yards are full of old junk at these prices.

Still need a WD45, or Gleaner E if anyone can help.

Hit Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. You can find a running WD for $800. Should be $300-400 for an engine and I am having a Gleaner E shipped Fastenal for $100 to my store.
