Got all the Tin off and blew out all the dust and cobwebs then I used a couple cans of brake clean and Blew that dry them I used a can of electramotive cleaner and sprayed everything down and blew that dry . The next question is what else do I need to do to clean the contacts up on this thing so it will weld ?

Some emory cloth on the rings there while it is turned would be a good start. That would brighten them up and check the brushes there.

I had a Miller that would not weld if it sat for a few weeks. I would spray the contacts with wd and after it ran a few minutes power would return.

I would remove the brush assembly, check the springs and brush length, clean the sides of the brushes and the inside of the holder, make sure they slide freely in the holder.

Then polish the rings with fine Emory cloth, or Crocus cloth if you can find it, then clean the rings with contact cleaner, blow away any grit left from the cleaning process.

If the rings are out of round, they will work for a while, but will probably arc. Eventually need to be trued in a lathe if the armature ever needs to come out.

It is generally NOT recommended to use emery cloth on slip rings or commutators. There are "dressing stones" available, or use fine SANDPAPER.

I would definitely clean up and polish the commutator contact strips but DO NOT use anything that leaves grit and fine residue. Same holds true when cleaning ignition points. While in there check brush length and the spring hold down tensions.

NO NO NO DO NOT USE EMRY CLOTH I will send you a cleaning stone in the mail or see if you can souce one locally at your local welding supply store. I will send you and email sv. and you send me your mailing address. john

There is a special polish for that. I don't remember the name . it is similar to auto rubbing compound. It is sold for electrical contacts.

cat guy a lot of emery cloths have stone, glass and metal in the abrasive and can destroy a slip ring or armature. you can buy cleaning stones at most welder supply stores or motor rewind supplyers. I repair welders for a living and have changed out rotors and armatures that have been wrecked with emery cloth.
