IH 496 Blade size

Hey all I need some help quick. I am going to look at an IH496 rock flex disk tonight after work. The seller says it has 17" blades on it. What size would they have been when new? Looking at other disks most seem to have 19-22" blades. I just don't want to buy a disk that will need all new blades before I use it.

When I was looking at 496 disks to buy I believe that they were either 20 or 22 inches. 17 inches means they have extensive wear on them. I would have to run out and check but I think the IH 37 we have can take 20 inch blades. In any event Case IH online parts would list the sizes used either smooth or notched.

Not sure what size they are when new(20,22?),but that disk is worn out. Will also have extensive wear on the bearings, bearing holders, other componets. If a 'fold up',look closely at the pivots and pins. Unless you can 'steal it',Pass on it.It will need work(lots of it) very soon.

Normal for that IH 37 disk was 18" but could be gotten with 20" but with that one the 37 I would stick with the 18". Had one and have a bunch of owners manuals for them.

I am pretty sure they came with 22 inch when new . Back when i was jockeying iron I use to buy a lot of the older I H disc's with wore out blade on the 37 and 370's and would reblade and replace bad bearings and add a Sherman and Williams over haul and i always put new 20 inch disc's on them . But back then the cost per blade did not require a trip to F.t Knox .

I have two IH 496 disks. They both came with 22 inch blades. IF you do buy the disk your going to need to reblade it. buy the OEM IH disk blades. They have a heavier center and are made out of high quality steel. I bought a set of Shoup blades and put them on one of the IH disks. The original blades lasted for 13 years. The Shoup set was shot in 4 years. I went back to IH blades and the current ones are 5 years old and are still over 21 inches in diameter.

Thank you all for the advice. I bought it for what I believe to be a fair price. The blades are worn but the rest seems to be in pretty good shape and it has a newer rolling basket on the back. I think I can get a year or two out of it then replace the blades and be ok.
