What grease would work?

I'm new to your discussion page, just registered this morning. I have a Ford 3 point sickle mower, model 501-1492. I'm replacing the pitman box, new bearings, seal, etc. I would like to know what grease should be used to pack those bearings.

If in an enclosed gear box probably a heavy gear oil and just enough grease to hold till they get oil. Otherwise gun grease will work if it has fittings to grease it.

If your packing, I would go to the autoparts and buy a can of bearing grease to pack them with. And yes, you can get different flavors, from moly to synthetic based.... All seem to work fine. If for underwater use, buy marine grade grease.

Another type of grease I have used you buy at your local lawnmower
parts store. Hope I have this correct. Type OO Grease. Used in the
chain drive transmissions of the older Snapper rider mowers. It is a
thick green greasy slimey oily kind of stuff. About $18.oo a quart
bottle. Have used it in all kinds of stuff for years. If things are
going to get really wet or even under water use that blue Marine
grease. I like the grease at tractor supply that is about mid price
the has several % of Molybdenum Disulfide "molly" in it. Wears really
well in heavy moving parts. It is classed as a soft metal, and is very
slick under pressure. Millitary uses it. That red high temp stuff is
good where things can get pretty warm. There is also a special grease
for the gear box used on corn heads for the cycle knife drive. Narrow
down what you are trying to do and let the guys chime in.

A 3rd option is cornhead grease. Lighter than regular gun grease, but much heavier than any of the gear oils. It does a good job of staying put if gearbox seals are questionable.
