Honda engine problem

Have an almost new (90 hr) ditchwitch rt 12 trencher. Powered by a Honda igx 390 horizontal shaft gas engine. When you hit the starter it just spins almost free. I have not checked the compression but is there a way or is it possible for the compression release to be stuck open on this engine. Just looks too new to be wore out.

I'd check the valves on it and see if they are moving and adjusted correctly. Valve clearance is .015 intake(+.006) and .020(+.008) exhaust.

From there is it under warranty? If it is I'd have it taken care of under warranty. If not let us know how the valves are doing.

Is just the starter spinning or the entire motor???? I have been having trouble with Honda starter drives sticking so they will not engage.

Yea, Me too.
Sounds like a starter problem.
Sometimes a weak battery won't let them spin fast enough to engage.

You are right about that but this is over on the rental side and is out of warranty but has not been the best piece of equipment to rent. Seems like ever time it goes out there is some problem. Going to get on it this morning and see what is going on. Thanks all for the comments. JD seller may be right the motor may not even be spinning was late yesterday when it came back in.

Compression release shouldn't be capable of releasing all compression, just enough to make for an easy start, if it even has one.

I suspect a stuck or bent valve, broken spring, intake pushrod...
