Not much sleep

This is what I got to do in the blowing snow last night. Not much sleep but it was worth it. Its a nice BIG bull calf, he had a hard time getting up because of his size and an even harder time finding "dinner" as he is so tall but with a little work and a good mamma cow he is doing well this morning. I sure enjoy calving season but I could do without the snow.

I was listening to a vet on a rural talk show radio and he confirmed everything my Dad had taught me...the sooner you get colostum into a new born the better. He said the calf will get off to a good start and will continue to grow strong and healthy and will do better than calves that were delayed several hours from their first feeding. My Dad used to get the calf on the cow when it was still wet, always said if the calf gets a belly full of milk everything will be OK. I always found that to be true.

Seems like after a calf is dry and belly full they can sure take a lot of what mother nature hands them. This guy was big and I imagine had some stress from birth so was a little worn out to get up right away. With some help I got him up, widened his stance in the front and balanced his back with his tail. It is incredible how all at once instinct takes over and they are off and going.

I love this time of year; new life starting from the ground up.
Do you use selenium? We have to due to deficentcy in soils south of the Mohawk Valley, NYS.

I don't envy you. I don't start until mid April anymore. I feed all of mine out and have two feedlots full most of the time,so weaning weights aren't that big a deal to me. It's easier to just calve on dry ground in green grass and not have to fight nature and then wean a hundred pound lighter calf.

I hear you on the not much sleep with calving, new years I had several cows freshening and the full moon is the only reason I can think of why they were all freshening at night that week. I just started a new job and selling my cows to my brother but helping him when I get home, makes for some short sleep since need to be back up by 3 in the morning.
