Rash of Telemarketers

Rainy day so I stayed inside to do paper work, however did expect a hay customer would call. Must of had 25 or 30 calls where caller ID let me know not to answer. Two left a message on answering machine, a screech followed by a "goodbye". What is going
on? Enough to make me consider giving up the land line! The "no call list" isn't working.

I'd like to know who is paying for these phone numbers so I can start selling them.....seems whenever I give mine out to a CL buyer I get a rash of TM calls. Fortunately caller id takes care of them.

I try to have fun with them, do all sorts of things to harass the callers. Lately, I get one on the line and interrupt them, saying something like " I have to inform you that this call is being recorded " for, law enforcement purposes"" They cannot get off the line fast enough. I kept one that was going to reduce my rate of interest, I fed him a line of BS until he needed my credit card numbers. Said I have to get my wallet, let him listen to the TV for a while then hung up. Seconds later phone rang again, just hung up again. I would like to "meet" one of these scums sometime, they might not walk to straight afterwords.
Seems like they call when your hands are oily from draining the oil or worse! joe

(quoted from post at 20:02:47 02/23/18) I think we got the same call. All I heard was goodbye. Have had several where no one is there.

If I have nothing better to do I pick up and listen...robo calls need a sound to activate the sales pitch...sometimes they want you to press "1' and then a real person comes on ....I just stay silent and waste their time....

We get ten to twenty a day sometimes. We don't pick up unless we know the numbers. If it's important they can leave a message. Lately many of them are spoofing our local exchange and some include a name. We were on the do not call list but it's useless now. When we signed up for a phone and internet bundle the calls started coming through and only got worse. Luckily the bundle included caller ID.

We had the same problem. There's a website called NOMOROBO.com. Gets rid of robo calls. Not a scam or anything. It's free and it works. Stops about 90% of those calls. We have Verizon, and they're set up with them. Phone rings one time, and then it zaps the call. If you hear your phone ring more than once,it's a legit call. If you want it on your cell phone,I think they charge 1.99 a month. But on your landline it's free.

I am getting them on my cell as well. And I only have a cell if I need help in some way while I am on the road. Never use it otherwise. And land line if I don't know number I do not answer it And I do have to keep the land line because it is a captioning phone for hard of hearing people.

They do seem to come in rashes. Seems when I get them, my wife also gets them.

But, be careful! It is tempting to mess with them, but best just hang up!

What can happen is they record the conversation, then edit, cut and recompose the words to form a sales contract.

Then you are obligated to pay for whatever they are selling!

Though they may never get any money, it can result in harassment from bill collectors and credit damage!

That's the beauty of a answering machine and a phone that displays the number.
I never answer the phone unless I know the number calling.
All the rest can leave a message and I might get back to you.
Solved that problem.

Don't get me started on the 'do not call' list. It's a darn joke. I think I'm getting MORE calls since we went on it.

Just last week, one of the calls came from Washington state. They left a message saying that they don't obey the 'do not call'. I looked the number up, and it is a Vancouver, Canada number. I guess that gives them the right to ignore it. I do have a voice mail that said that.

I am on AT&T for cell service. One time is all they can call me, and then it's blocked. Takes one call to block the number.

Another trick they love to pull is to put a '1' before they call me back. Or a '11'. Or call from several different numbers, I had one a hole call me from over 580 numbers, meaning for example 888-888-0001 through 888-888-1001, 1009, etc, etc. Not the real number they called from, just an example. Enough for now. DOUG

BIL got one of those calls on the landline years ago, laid the phone down on the floor where the dog was eating supper!

Everyone says they don't answer if they don't recognize the number. Heck, I have trouble remembering my own. HeHe. I got a Lisa call about my credit card account, on my cell phone. Their phone number was the same area code and 3 digit exchange as my phone number. They are getting tricky!!!!

I never answer the phone with "Hello" Good morning or good evening means the computer starts getting confused. Even better is answering with a "Bueno" or "Buenos Dias"... though politically incorrect, they really don't want to talk to a Spanish speaker.

Sometimes just for fun, if I know a call is a telemarketer, I answer the phone in Japanese and continue to talk in Japanese. It drives them nuts.

Sports whistle next to the phone, or, if a CB or Business radio...key the mic next to the phone. They"ll enjoy the screech!

Was getting a lot of calls wanting to help me with medicare supplements. They would already know my name. So I told them I was his son and that I had passed away. Calls stopped!

Man you guys are not alone this winter it seems out phone has rung off the wall. Called the phone company and let them know if it continued we would drop our service. Well, they responded with use two different ways to help stop it. We use both and finally peace and quiet a few do sneek through I write down the number and add to the list.
