Is this generator big enough?

Hey all,

I called on this generator this morning, and ended up running down to a construction company in Marion, Ia this afternoon. It’s a lil big for my purposes, but i think I can make do.

Big problem is the Ford 380 diesel is locked up from rainwater getting in it. It never froze.

(quoted from post at 20:31:31 02/23/18) Looks like a 50 KW DDB. Nice unit to have. Should be worth looking into.
n his generator, looks like a winner!
I want to thank you again Mr. Billy Schafer for all the info you provided me with on the Onan EC series 223Ford driven 25KW unit the I found. Your were a great help and it does all the 3 phase work that we needed. Much appreciated.

At work years ago, one of our flatbed trailers
came in with a 440,000 watt unit. Had a 12V92
Detroit pushing it, could make 110, 220 and 480
volts I believe. Can't imagine how much fuel it
would use.

Hi Billy,

Have you ever dealt with the Ford 380 diesel? Is it worth fixing up if it takes more than a little oil to knock it loose, or should I just find a different engine to put on it?

Thanks.

Glad I could help. Not an expert but I know a few things. I got to thinking the other day. I have been doing this since 1968. So I have
learned a few things. Guess I will retire some day. Let me know if I can be of any help.

It all depends on how bad the damage is. Does it turn over at all. I would try what cole said. It may not be in bad shape. That has
the English Ford engine. Same as used on tractors. If you will give me the unit type I can get more information for you. Should be a
black and silver tag on it. It will have the model and serial number or the model name. Should be DDA,DYJ or something like that. The
english ford were the odd balls of the Onan line.

On units that large if there was a major engine problem. We pulled the unit and sent it to a shop. I would say yes it is worth
restoring. If the money is there. Better than most units you will find today.

That shows to be a June 1975 model. 50 KW Can be rewired for voltage up to 480 single or three phase. Two wire remote start. Single
fault alarm. Simple control system. DEG is the English Ford model. I will find you some manuals.

Hey Billy,

I really appreciate that! It’s older than I figured, not that it’s a bad thing. It had been in a hanger at the Cedar Rapids airport and the company I bought it from had been hired to tear the hanger down. The service manager told me that they drug it back to the shop years ago, played with it for a bit, lost interest, and it sat inside. Their shop was huge, but also packed full of stuff that was being worked on. The radiator is drained and the crankcase is full of diesel fuel.

I don’t know what you’re gonna do as far as manuals, but my email address is rocky ridge 53813 at gmail dot com if you want to send info there.

Thanks for the help so far.
