Spline shaft repair

The front spline on the powershaft on my JD 24T is worn. The teeth are almost half gone. My parts baler does not seem much better. Anyone know if a machine shop could build it back up?

Compare two or three shops for price and time to get done. Tell them the Nominal Outside Diameter and number of splines. It
should be a common capacity. Also see if you can get a rebuilt shaft, or a NOS shaft. Jim

Local guy here wants the hub/gear that shaft goes into to do the job. That way they know it fits, just a heads up for you before you just take the shaft there.

I have never taken a 24T apart but looking at your picture it appears that only the end is engaging and the rest looks new. If that is so, is there an adjustment
to use more of the spline to spread out the 'load' so it will last longer? This is more of a observation question than an answer.

The gear rides on the splines close to the smooth shaft. A cotter pin holds it on. The gear has some wear but nothing like the shaft.

Epoxy of any kind would not last an hour.

How old is this shaft? I'd grease it good with some modern high pressure grease and watch it go many more years. Sounds like the shafts are softer than the gears and that is good. If you get one made you won't get the same life unless you get it heat treated properly and not hard enough to wear out the gear.

There should be no movement between the shaft and hub so I thought Devon Plastic Steel Putty would work.
