We have a TD6 on the farm with all new tracks and rebuilt engine, but it cracked the head when I got it hot pulling logs with it one time when I didn't notice a coolant leak when I was running it. I wasn't sure what to do with it, part it out, try to sell it the way it was, etc. I have a spare head for a D248 off from my parts MD, but I really didn't want to part with it since the head on my other MD has an external crack that I'm not sure I can stitch due to it's location. I was perusing the local scrap yard a month or so ago and noticed a TD6 in the long iron pile being cut up. Still had the engine in it. Forgot to ask about it before I left. A couple weeks ago my brother mentioned he wanted to get the TD6 back up and going again so he could use it and I told him about the engine over there. I know the guy that runs the scrap yard over there so I called to ask him about it since I didn't have time to get over there. He told me they used it at their place all the time but the tracks were so bad they couldn't keep them on there at all no matter how they tried so they retired it and cut it up, but it still ran well. He told me $300 would buy it, so I told him I'd send my brother over for it. My brother went and got it today, and said one of the workers had tried to lift it up before he got there by hooking around the manifold. Well, I think we all know how that went. It broke the manifold, smashed in the oil pan and dented in the valve cover when it tipped over against something next to it. They only charged him $240 for it though, so I'm ok with that. I've got all the parts we'll need off my parts MD, but probably won't use them, I'll probably just pull the head off the parts engine and have it checked over and just put it on the engine on the dozer since it's been rebuilt. The rest of the engine I'd probably just add in along with my other MD parts. If the head isn't any good, I won't be out any money either way. She may run again here soon! (Depending on how long it takes my brother to swap the head). Told him I had other stuff I'm working on that are more important currently.
