How much height difference is there betweem 18.4x38,and 20.8x38? Thinking of replaceing/converting to 20.8s on the 1456 when I replace the current 18.4s.Will the 20.8s 'fit' in the furrow of my 16" plow?Or will they just be too big? Will I like em,or wish I'd stayed with 18.4s?I think it might be kind of cool to have a different size tire on each tractor. 20.8 on the '14';18.4 on the '12';16.9 on the '7';15.5 on the '8';14.9 on the 400;13.6 on the M/SM;12.4 on the SH. LOL!Bunch of foolishness, right? Steve

This is from a tire retailer. Actual measurements very some by manufacturer and model. You will need wider rims going up, but going down they work ok.

You will find they are about 4 inch taller total. They recommend 18 inch wide rims. Here is an interesting thing: 20.8x 38 are the same height as 18.4x42 tires. This holds true up through the sizes. 20.8x34 equals 18.4x38 in height.

I have seen several tractors with 18.4 x 42 on the inside and 20.8x38 on the outside as duals. This way they have narrow tires for spraying and such but more tire on the ground for tillage.

As for your 16 inch plows and 20.8 tires. You will see the side wall mashed down with the wider tires. If I was going to play with tires sizes I would use step up rims and go to 18.4x42s. Keep in mind any of these switches is going to cost you a pretty penny to do. Look at how many acres you run and think about if you can justify the extra dollars.

I?m running 480:80:38 tires in a 14 inch furrow with no problem at all they seem to be a bit wider than a 18.4.38

The only thing about the wider tires on my tractor is they are next to worthless on snow and ice but they do great on dirt or mud

I am in the process of going from 18.4 to 20.8. I did it to gain a tiny bit more clearance for baling. 20.8 tires usually go on 18? rims. I found 20.8r38 firestone deep tread radials that call for 16? rim and bought those. Haven?t picked them up yet so don?t know how they will work. They are expensive though. Could have got the regular firestone radials cheaper, and had enough left over to buy used 18? rims.

I run 20.8-38's in a 16in furrow. Works fine. Guy that owned it before me did lots of plowing with it with the same size plow.
