I made the mistake of unhooking the batteries on my oliver 88 diesel yesterday without looking to see how it was hooked up. The tractor is all original with a generator and positive ground but my question is when I hook the positive post on the first battery to the ground and then I go to hook the cable up that connects the batteries I should hook it to both negative posts together on the batteries right? Leaving the positive on the second battery to go to the starter?

Assuming it is 12 volt positive ground
If using 2 12 volt batteries in parallel, connect both negative posts together and to starter solenoid or switch. Connect both positive posts together and to frame ground
If using 2 6 volt batteries in series connect negative of one battery to starter, the positive of that battery to negative of second battery, and positive of second battery to ground.
For safety reasons, Make your connections to the starter first. Ground connection to the frame should always be last one connected, first one disconnected

Anymore, any time I get ready to take something apart that I might be more that 1/2 minute putting back together, I take a PIC with my phone, i.e. the breakers in my shop, a wiring plug I needed advice on, etc. I've sent PICs of parts to parts guys/gals half a country away. It saves more than it costs. If you already have the phone, it doesn't cost a dime. gm
Great question and great answers, along with a picture. You guys are good. I'm going to start a new folder on my computer just for stuff like this. Due to the volume of participation on this forum, it's easy for this kind of information to get lost, or so far down the list of pages, that it can't be found.
