OT Freightliner FL60

I have a 2002 FL 60 tractor with air brakes. The last couple of days when I have driven it the air pressure is holding at 100lbs, normally its around 120-125. When I turn the truck off it sounds as if the air valve for the truck brakes is leaking. I only have air brakes on the truck, it does not have a valve for a trailer. My hearing is not what it used to be but it sure sounds like its the air valve, I believe the fittings are pressed, so it looks like I will have to take it in for repairs. Is this correct? Any advice will be appreciated.

avant before you head into a shop for repairs, mix up a windex spray bottle with soap and water and starting at the compresser outlet line work your way back along your airlines, airdryer, airtank, brakepots, spraying them down good and you'll find it pretty quick. when you get to the brake pots spray the whole pot down they will sometimes be leaking out of the seam between the chambers , and when you get to the distribution blocks spray the whole block down I have had those fail on my Kenworth.

On 2 of the IH trucks at work the air tanks have pin holes in them. One already had a replacement tank as the bracket had been altered. My previous employer also had an air tank with a hole in it on his truck. Just something else to check as those tanks are pretty thin.

If your truck has an air drier, check under air drier to see if your leak is not there , it is what they call the purge valve, after time it sticks and will leak, also chk around the brake valve under floor board that the brake petal hooks too, they leak internally

another place to look , if it has the push in fittings after time they vibrate and do not seal, do what they said take a spray bottle with dawn soap mixed and spray away at the connections

When you say air valve are you meaning the park brake "button? I have replaced a lot if them because they do not seal and are always letting a little air out the vent port. Just replaced one a few weeks back.

Sorry I did not make my post as clear as I should have, you are correct I am talking about the button. What I hear is a constant flow of air for maybe 6-8 seconds, then it stops. What is the process of removing the dash to get to this critter? If nothing else I can spray it with soaping water to see if in fact whether it is leaking or not. Thanks

It is normal under some conditions for the air to rush through that valve making a noise that sounds like a leak. One of the truck that I drive does it while the trailer brakes are releasing. I know that you don't have a trailer, but, if you have a leak elsewhere, it is going to make noise at that valve. So don't pull that valve out until after you have checked for leaks as the other guys have told you.

If what you hearing is coming from the park knob in the dash, does it leak when they are applied or released,or, all the time ? if it is all the time it most likely is the valve in the dash. If you only hear a leak when the brakes are released, then it COULD be air passing thru it and leaking out of a brake chamber or an air line that feeds the spring side of a chamber or the quick release valve for the spring side. But if it is the dash valve leaking out of itself,it needs replaced. Actually those valves are notorious for blowing apart, at least on m-2s. Those air lines are are push lock design and are dis engaged by compressing the ring on the fitting towards the valve, while pushing in on the line, then pulling out of the fitting.BUT,they release much easier when you drain all the air off first.(I would just drain all the tanks!)Mark

4520bw is correct, that is a common leak on an older truck, to remove the valve in your dash the right side of dash folds down, now to get it down at the top there is a strip that looks like a black rubber strip that goes the length of the dash, pry up one end with a pic, and pull strip all the way out, you will not hurt nothing, then you can get to valve from there, to reinstall. close dash back up and insert strip, you can use your thumb to press it back into place

(quoted from post at 20:49:04 02/11/18) You have a diaphragm leaking in a parking brake chamber.

And that is why it won't build to full pressure. You should be able to feel the air coming out orient the rod.
