Does anyone have experience dealing with Lor-Lin Farms in Orrstown PA? I am just curious to know if he is open to dealing on his tractors and taking lower prices to make a deal? He has an Oliver 1850 that I am interested in for $5500, but I don't want to waste my time driving 4 hours if he is the type of person who will not negotiate on prices. By the looks, it is not worth more than 4000 to 4500.

You know the best deals are in Newark Valley, don't do anything till the auction on the 20th. Got a 3020 coming in today.

A few years I bought this 1650D off I-81 near Scranton (much closer to you I guess). The used dealer wanted $3500 and I couldn't talk him down on the phone. He had a 1750 3spd also so I thought it was worth the 3-1/2 hour ride anyhow. I had not seen the 1650 until I got there. It was ugly and I first thought ... ok this was a wasted trip. And the 1750 would not bump start after trying on a big hill. But then the guy fired up the 1650D and went down to the bottom the pasture and pulled the 1750 up that steep hill with a cable. The 1650 went by me at the top of the hill and was burning clear, and sounded great. I was sold!
I was glad I went to look at it, it's turned out to a good find. An added bonus was that about a week after I got it home, I found a name and phone number on a old receipt in the bottom of the tool box. Called the number and it was the original owner! He said the the motor had been rebuilt at about 4500 hours and said he had traded it in because the power PS leaked and there was oil in the coolant and was done with it. The oil turned out to be ATF from the trans cooler. So only minor problems.

My point is that it was overpriced and ugly but I was glad I made the trip.

Work delivery into the final price. Have your financing worked out ahead of time. When you decide that something is want you want, be prepared to pay for it on the spot.

I'd call him and be upfront about it just tell him the situation you're a pretty good ways away and it'll cost you to come look and to get it home. And does he think he has room to deal a little? Then go from there he wants to sell the tractor or he wouldn't advertising it.Who knows he may be having a truck headed your way or something.

I brought a tractor a couple of states away 3 years ago. I felt it was a good price already on it but while talking on the phone to the guy I mentioned it would cost me 500 bucks or so to come and get it so I was really adding that to my total price. He said he would drop the price the 500 bucks if I wanted the tractor. Just saying it might be a method of getting the guy to come down a little on the price without getting him upset. Usually I will call first and kind of get the feel of the deal before making the trip and ask if the price is firm.

That is about an hour north of me. Haven't dealt with him. But a 4-hour ride isn't bad if that is what your looking for. No one is going to haggle on the phone, and that's not a bad price for the area. If you don't have a rig to haul it home and he will deliver it you can work that into the deal also.
I drove that far once to look at a 1750 w/short wheelbase further up I-81 for $5500 with 6,000 hours. It ran decent and the only trouble I was the chain coupling shook a bit. Never know until you look it over and even then there are always more surprises.

Blackhole ...... I agree ...... maybe not expect the guy to OK or reject a phone offer, but the question of whether he is firm on his price or open to a reasonable offer is a fair question. Sure wouldn't hurt to ask. This isn't exactly a quick trip across town.
