I?m looking at a 1965 John Deere 4020 LP Powershift tractor. Is this an uncommon combination? How much would it be worth if I were to completely restore it from top to bottom?

There were only 8445 out of a total of 184,879 4020's built between '63-'72 with LPG engines & I'll guess way less than 1/2 had Powershift transmissions. I'd prefer LPG powered 4020 over gasoline powered model

My guess is a 1969 to 1972 console 4020 LP PowerShift would be very collectable. A 1965, not so much. Unrestored 65 in working condition $3,000 to $5,000, fully restored $5,000 to maybe $8,000.

My first JD was about that year and an LP 4020, purchased around 1990-95 time line. Had been looking a long time for a 4010-20 diesel and none to be found locally so I was easily wooed into this monstrosity.

The weep holes on the side of the block were leaking and I didn't know what that meant at the time......found out later. Owned it for roughly 5 years. Had to do an inframe on the engine initially, a little later a new regulator which was really hard to find. Constant problems trying to find the "sweet spot" go get it to start. Ambient temp played a big part in what it wanted to start.

Had a 100 gal. wheeled nurse tank. Had to take it to the field with me as the thing wouldn't make a day's work without wanting more milk.......Propane fueling was a real beast. Ambient temp was your enemy. Either the tank pressure was too high or too low. Ran really hot at the operator's station, not the engine's running temp, the temp of the air that the cooling fan blew across the operator's (open) station.

Couldn't wait to get rid of that beast.

I don't understand why you had problems refueling a LPG powered vehicle. Back in the 70's I drove a Ford 1 ton with GN trailer powered by LPG picking up/delivering farm equipment. I had no problem refilling fuel tank utilizing a wet line on a 250 gallon storage tank. Open vehicle tank bleeder with wet hose attached when liquid sprayed out of bleeder shut both valves. IIRC that 460 cid engine ran better on LPG than gasoline.

"what's it worth" is relative. If you're a collector who doesn't have one,More. But for an every day user to the average 'Joe',not so much. If you want to 'restore' to sell for profit.Dont. You wont. Probably loose money. A lot of it. If you want to restore or your own enjoyment,go for it. A friend bought a 4010 propane at a sale last year. Decent old tractor with good tires and a POS rattletrap cab.Even had the original top link.Pd $1500.Nobody wants a propane tractor.
