shoulder surgery

Keep us posted on the progress . Was the replacement due to a worn ball/socket/cartilage, bone breakage or ruined ligaments .

That sounds long by today's standards, Mike. I hope all gets better quickly for you. The rehab time I have done on mine has been beneficial, if that helps. I anticipate a couple of those replacements in my future, as well, hoping they get better at it.

A lady at church had a hip done Monday, outpatient surgery now for full replacement. No overnight stay.

I had both hips replaced, '09 and '10, piece of cake compared to this. I got the reversal because three of rotator cuff were gone. Old injuries that were retracted and could not be fixed. Guy in the next room and across the hall had the same thing but both are ten years younger than me. Doc's words, the RC was "a mess." He also re-did the carpal tunnel to clean up scarring so that will slow it down, too. ohiojim, how did yours turn out?

I was in three days for each hip and back to work in 6 and 8 weeks. The new technique goes in the front and there are no restrictions after. For shoulders they keep you in till they're sure your pain is controlled and it's 24 to 48 hours for the nerve block to wear off.

I have been told shoulder surgery is about the toughest there is pain wise. I had surgery for rotator and one reattachment. I thought I was pretty tough till I had that surgery and the therapy. LOL When I was in the waiting room at the therapist office a lady came in with her arm in a sling, she had had shoulder surgery of some sort too. She said she gave birth three times and childbirth is a piece of cake compared to her shoulder surgery. I am not trying to scare anybody, the pain is only temporary.

Had two rotator cuff surgeries. Don't know how a shoulder replacement compares to a rotator cuff surgery, but a knee replacement is a piece of cake compared to shoulder surgery.

Two rotator cuffs done I'm not sure first was easy 3 hours after surgery feeding cattle and driving truck end of the week the therapy nurse asked me how i was doing i said fine just a little trouble starting the chain saw she didn't swear but i think she wanted to. 2nd surgery really flattened me friends came and got me and wouldn't let me go home for a couple days that one i had a pain pump attached thankfully the cattle were gone. The first one i had done in winter and i won't do that again plowing snow with the tractor was fun especially if you forgot and parked the tractor wrong. I think the best therapy is just get out and do something on the 2nd time i simply grabbed a bucket and walked the farm picking rocks. In the mean time ice packs and drugs . One thing i learned is when you get into bed lay with your bad shoulder out you well always roll downhill to the center of the bed and if you don't roll on your good shoulder you will wish you had but for now i hope your recliner is comfortable you'll be there for a month.

Almost forgot if you have a smart phone use the memo part to keep notes and when you take medicine and when pain happens i did that the 2nd time and it was appreciated by the doctors plus they didn't belive i wasn't taking all the pain killers but i had proof.

They gave me oxycodone, never used it before. The stuff is awful. It gave me crazy dreams, constipation and didn't do much for the pain. I stopped it after three days.

Had a Knee replaced in 2015, and a rod put in my back in 2012.....
Now they tell me I have pretty good damage to my cuff in my right shoulder, and a lot of calcification. I only get about 4 hours sleep at night due to pain. I recovered from both the knee and back in record time, with little meds. The part that bothers me is the "down time" after the shoulder surgery.....
Probably gonna be a "live with" in my situation....

Did you ask for different meds it's probably to late now but the 2nd one they put a needle in the shoulder and fed something like novacane through it and had a little valve you could adjust. Unfortunately i didn't listen to the nurses instructions on how to run it something i regretted latter but when i figured it out it was nice .

I have had 8 major surgeries. The 2 worst were rotator cuff surgeries. Not only is it very painful, it just goes on and on.

I had left shoulder rotator cuff surgery with a slap tear in 2010. Surgery time was supposed to be a little over 2 hours but it was close to 6 hours. Was supposed to take Percocet 4 times per day but had side effects of constipation, shortness of breath so I cut it to twice a day. Did not have the amount of pain I told I could except post-op and glad of that. Thought the nerve block was never going to wear off. Was expected to have 70% use and on pain meds. After 10 weeks of PT I regained 100% use and not on any meds. Very grateful for that. In the future I'm potentially looking at a right knee replacement.

Question, I tore my AC joint (it's where your collar bone attaches to your shoulder) and broke my finger backwards. In the Emergency Room they gave me morphine. It did not relieve any of the pain. Then they gave me some other type of pain medicine and that was effective. The question is "does morphine not work for some of you"?

I had that rotator cuff done and was 3 years before I got full use of my arm. I was to see Dr. for shoulder the day I was getting 5 bypasses done. And shoulder was done 7 months later.

Supposed to have my left (non-useful) shoulder replaced, just wore out. After reading all this,I don't think I'll do it! Probably only got a few years left anyway.

Sorry for your pain!!
Had shoulder repair surgery 2013 - used a Cryo/Cuff a lot, still do when it flares up again. Really help swelling and pain, much better than ice packs which can freeze skin.

You can even sleep with it

DO THE THERAPY - ONLY DO WHAT THE THERAPIST SAYS!! My should felt so good, I chopped out the garden - -PAIN and 3 week set-back in Therapy!!

Best Wishes!

I had right rotator cuff done April 2013. Off work for 12 weeks. Just had my left complete shoulder replacement April 2017, Off work for 12 weeks. Rotator cuff is working real good, total shoulder is still some sore at times but rotator cuff is gone, but have good movement. Make sure you do as therapist and Dr. says. Dr. says full replacement shoulder could take up to a year to be good. I wear bibies and I notice that the left strap wants to fall down more so than the right since there is no rotator there..
Good Luck and do not over do it, do your home therapy also.

Thank you all for the support and advice. I plan on doing the therapy religiously and not overdoing other activities. We have some warmer days coming up and I regret I will not be able to work on the E4.
dachshund, try sleeping on your good side with your arms around a bed pillow. Always helped for me.
Illini, they gave me an Iceman, similar machine.

Update: Saw the doc this morning, X-rays shoe all is in place... and why it hurts. The ball seats in a counterbore in the shoulder blade and is fastened with one screw down the center and four more around the flange.
