OT-Winch Question

I have a winch on my CanAm Outlander ATV that I use to plow snow. Today the cable broke about 8 inches from the hook. Is it possible to splice or repair the cable, or replace just the cable, or is a new winch the only option? I apologize if this is a dumb question.

Thanks in advance.

Just cut the broken cable off the hook and go to any hardware store and buy a cable clamp, and thread the broken end of cable from winch thru the hook and tighten it up. Simple simple solution.

I will add a bit of advice. Use good quality vinyl electrical tape and tape 5 tight wraps at the place it has broken. Cut shreads off with a cutoff wheel on a die grinder or abrasive cutoff wheel (metal chop saw). This keeps things tidy. Jim

Also, a cable thimble is required to maintain maximum strength in the cable. 2 clamps are standard for maximum strength. Also, be sue to install them in the correct orientation. The nuts have to be on the live side of the loop.

I can't believe that a front blade would need to be double clamped, but it may have chafed thru if he mounted the winch upside down and it is spooling in on the bottom rather than over the top, and the cable is rubbing on a frame member.

I use my winch for my atv snow plow too. If the rest of the cable is in good shape just cut off the frayed end and put a new loop in it using clamps or ferule. Replace the thimble if needed. If the cable is short then replace it with new. I replaced mine after several breaks and some kinks. My problem is sometimes lifting the blade too high and putting stress on the end causing the cable to break of the ferule to give way. I do use a cushion, but it only absorbs so much. If you decide to use your old cable, I suggest you wrap the cable tightly with electricians tape a few inches from the end before you cut the cable. I use a cut off wheel on an angle grinder to cut the cable. I cut in the middle of the tape wrap. With the tape, the cable twist does not loosen. Cut slowly so as not to create any frayed ends. I'd do some research on cable vs synthetic rope if your thinking of going that way, it has its advantages but disadvantages as well. Hope this helps.

the other option EUG560 is to buy an eye for that thickness of cable and loop it around the eye and braid it back into itself, my dad taught me how to braid rope and steel cable as he used to braid steel cable for the old style steam drills under ground in hardrock mines. braiding is actually pretty simple and easy and I'm sure there is a you tube video out there showing you how to braid rope or cable, if not come on over to my place and i'll show you how in a few minutes. MUCH stronger connection than cable clamps.

I plow with a Kawasaki mule, it had the synthetic rope on it, I took it off and put this strap on it,it's the only time I use the winch, it works good.

Yes wrap the cable with tape and grind it apart. On that little cable I just tie it with a saddle knot. Then tape the end to the cable. Don't over think it.

It makes no sense to replace an entire 30' or 50' cable when only the first few inches is damaged. Like the others have said, just cut it off and reattach the hook with hardware store cable clamps.
