Case 1845C block heater

I put a Kat block heater in my skidloader, it didn't last a year, I only used it about fifteen times. I took it back and got a new one under warranty. I tested it before I installed it, plugged it in for the first time yesterday, doesn't work. Tested the cord and it was good, tested heater,it was bad. Parts store said they only warranty the first one. It's a $85.00 heater, and has only been in the engine a month. Are they that bad of a block heater?

Just a thought, are you orienting the heating element correctly in the block? Assuming this is a frost plug style heater you have.

Two things. We sold Kats, and Temro/Zerostart coolant heaters and had less problems with the Zerostart units (in fact one of the wholesalers we dealt with dropped Kats and went to Zerostart). Do you start the engine with the heater still plugged in? Both Kats and Zerostart both say in the instructions not to start the engine with the heater plugged in.

I always unplug the heater before I start the machine. The heating element is slightly different than the original but, I know there is clearance between it and the block.

Well there is a part number out there ( don't have it at hand) that gets too close to the block and will bur out ever time. Are you in a 1 inch screw out plug or using a freeze plug. Where are you locating the unit. Ill bet you are too close to metal, ie not enough water surrounding the element.

This is a frost plug heater. I'm thinking you are right, this one has a slight bend in it compared to the original maybe quarter inch closer to the block. I showed the parts guy that when I bought the first one.

There is a fleetguard service bulletin out there somewhere about just what we are talking about. Has to have that critical ben to give it room for the water between the unit. Over heating burning it out.

The bend in the two I installed puts the element maybe quarter inch closer to the block. Might be just enough to cause a problem.
