Choked me up

Saturday I was looking around the family farm. Looked up, high on the old barn post, and found my Grandfather's dog tag. Was when he enlisted in the Army 1935. Can't tell you how many hours I spent playing and farting around this place as a kid. Never noticed this nailed 7' up. Sure do miss him. Better than finding $1k cash.

He also served in the Navy during WWII in England, artillery gunner. Haven't found those tags, if ever. But made me feel like he was there with me. Even for a moment.

Real glad you found it. Most are lost forever. I found mine 2 weeks ago, first time I had seen them since
1973. Darn things are still green with "jungle rot".

That is very special! I have one of my dad's hanging on my wall lamp, over my computer. Joe

(quoted from post at 23:40:50 01/16/18) Why does it have both JR & SR?Ron

In this case, I think that Sr., in Smithfield,VA would be the one notified if something happened to the Jr.

Not having blood type puzzled me too. Maybe was missed, or before they did that?

hd6gtom, I have my Dad's tags from Vietnam too. One is dirty, other is clean. Maybe a replacement.

That's a neat find all right. If you had found it when you were a kid, it would have probably be gone by now. Keep it in a safe place. If you look at the hole it appears to have been worn on the top from hanging around your Grandfather's neck. I still have mine from my Navy days. Stan

Not trying to tell you what to do but the first thing that came to mind when I saw your photo was a nice 8 x 10 size picture frame, a nice light oak frame with some red or green velvet as a background and the tag centered in it, and of course glass to protect it.

If you still have a photo of him, you could put that in as well.

Something for generations to come to cherish.

37chief- your right about that. Glad I found it now and not then!

Determined- good idea. I made a memorial box for both Grandad & Dad with their flags and medals. Mr. Barlow taught me a lot about woodworking. Time to make a new display case.
