Farmall Super MD

I have a nice Farmall SUper MD that starts easily on gas and converts to diesel but will NOT rev up when the throttle is opened. What could be the problem?

If it has been out of action for a year or more, the rack may be stuck in place. If so it will run at one speed. Sometimes way too fast sometimes not at all because it was stopped with the pump shut off. It is not too complex to free up the rack. Some solvent, some time, and effort. A manual might be important if you are nervous. Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the reply...its been really hard to find anyone who knows about these tractors. Even at the IH dealer. If you would send me an email at [email protected] I would a appreciate it or a phone call. I have done everything I can think of.

Lets try the following to see if it can be set right. Do not take it off of the engine. The oil can be drained from the pump from below (usually a petcock or plug) the side plate can be removed removing injector lines (from both ends) allows them to be taken out of the way (don't bend them out of the way). Removal of the big hex nut cover, and the fuel line fittings (where the lines were removed) will allow the top od the pump to be removed. This gains access to the internal components. You will see the plunger assembly on the right and a control rack that spins the sleeve to change the injection amount. the 4 holes to the left are a distributor system and usually give no problem. Use lacquer thinner on a small artists brush to wet the moving parts of the plunger and rack. keep it dampened with thinner and work the rack with the lever to apply pressure back and forth. DO not use force on the system, just enough to make it feel that it should move. Keep at it till things start to let go. Then use a thin oil like 3-N-1 to further lube the plunger control sleeve. WHen things seem free, you can put it back together. I have no sources for parts, I sold My MD 19 years ago, and fixed it 23 years ago. A Blue ribbon (IH) repair manual has all the details. I used a skim coat of permatex #2 for sealing up the top cover and side cover after making a gasket for the side cover. Take digital pictures of everything and be clean as can be. Fill it with engine oil to the site glass or level plug/petcock. 15W-40 diesel grade Rotella or Delo are my favorites. This is really all I have to offer and when it is written, it can be looked at more than once. Jim

First, verify that when you adjust the throttle, the linkage to the pump is actuating its throttle lever.

I pasted a link that has some good pictures in it showing how to look to see if the "rack" is moving when the throttle is adjusted. Simple remove the filler cap from the injection pump ( 2 7/16" bolts) and you can see the end of the rack. If it does not move when the throttle is adjusted then it is stuck. Gently pry it and apply a good penetrating oil to try to break it loose.

You may not have to do a complete disassembly to free it!

There is a lot of resources regarding this problem, just search it on google. The TD6 pump is the same, and many others are very similar in design and can be used as resources too.

Good luck!

Jim,

Thank you so much for the detailed process. I will definitely give it a go when the weather gets better.
