Had a guy call twice saying he was from Ireland and he is interested in buying a 9n tractor I have for sale my gut tells me this is a scam, but he asked and new a lot about early 9ns - your thoughts thanks

There are many Ford and Ferguson collectors in Ireland or England. Just only take cash for payment and all would be well.

If desire is solid, and local availability is more expensive than the combined purchase and shipping costs, it is a deal. The factor is assurance of clear intentions and financial security. Jim

that's one of the red flags it comes up unknown he is going to call back sun. am. I have a couple of questions for him such as what time it is there he is 8 hrs ahead what his phone number is with area code and e-mail address ILL see if he hesitates or does not have the answers he said shipping was3800.00

New scams every day. Got to be careful. He should know the local time in Ireland, wherever he is actually.

I'd take PayPal but verify whether the payment can be reversed after you think you have the money.

Maybe he has a brother who happens to be a Nigerian Prince who could forward the money to you for a nominal fee.

My wife is from Ireland and when she gets a call from one of her sisters our Caller ID does not work. Good idea to ask some questions and see how clear the answers are.

Last time I was there, there was a potato field behind one of the places we stayed for a few days. Every morning we were there three guys showed up with a truck and some old Ford tractor dragging a homemade potato digger and they would dig some rows and bag them. 14 lbs to a bag which they call a stone. Maybe that's a question for your buyer. "how many pounds in a stone?"

I'm pretty happy with Paypal. I get lots of small payments (15$-$500) in through them from US and international buyers each year and have never had anything go bad.

They take their cut out of a transaction though so keep that in mind. IIRC, it is a bit over 4% for international transactions.

Depending on the size of the sale, you might want to talk to your bank about a wire transfer. I'm pretty sure the fees are much lower and I think charged to the sender, not the receiver.

don't think twice it is a scam. if you want to have some fun when the caller starts asking for personal info give him/her bogus info. and keep them talking as long as possible then tell em to go to hades.

Wise to be cautious, but it could easily be legit.

I've successfully sold a motorcycle engine that shipped to Indonesia and an entire motorcycle that shipped to Japan.

I don't do paypal, but I set up a stand-alone bank account (not connected in any way to any of my other accounts) to accept wire transfers.

Apparently, some folks have more money than sense as in both cases the cost of shipping was easily double the cost of the item.

I had a friend sell an old Mercedes on Ebay that specifically said 'no international sales'. A guy from Bulgaria won it for an outrageous price. He paid with PayPal and (as agreed under the circumstances) arranged every bit of the pickup and shipping. Worked out perfect.

Too early to get worried answer his questions He will tell you how He will pay. If He is real payment can be easy and you will have the money before the tractor leaves your possession with a call from His bank to yours.

A fellow I know sells a lot on ebay. He got taken by pay pal as after the item sold and shipped pay pal dinged him ,the seller because the buyer paid with a stolen credit card.

Might check out Craigslist in his area and see what the tractor market is like. I think it could be easily legitimate but I would proceed with caution.

Honestly, just the fact that he called you makes this more likely to be legit. Scammers like email because it's easy to mask where they are emailing from.

Caller ID does not work internationally so that's not a sign of anything.

As others have said, proceed with caution. Personally, I thing the safest way to accept an international payment is NOT Paypal, but to do what has been suggested. Have a bank establish a separate, non-linked account. Have Mr. Ireland wire funds to that account. Only when funds are present and available for withdraw should you cash out, close the account, and allow pickup/shipping to occur. Tell buyer 2 weeks from date of transfer to be safe.

Keep in mind, there's risk on HIS end too. If he's legit and not up to no good, he will likely ask for things that verify that you and the tractor are both real and legit as well. Specific pictures, your address, a picture with something like a newspaper from today so he can see the tractor is real and in your possession, etc.

International shipping is not as hard to arrange these days as most people think it is. Especially for items that can fit in a connex container, that's practically as easy as dropping a box off at UPS.

Grouse I,ve talked to my bank and that is exactly what I,m going to do if he decides to buy it I,m going to my bank and open a new separate account and have mr. Ireland wire transfer to it then I will transfer to my account and close it out also it is a lot cheaper for me then paypal it would cost 4% plus the bank is a flat $ 40.00 thanks for all the help grizz

A friend of mine and YT'er from Ireland buys many tractors over here and ships them back to Eire. He usually comes over every year and makes a buying trip a vacation for the family. He pretty much specializes in Ford and Massey's......
