584 Diesel steering pump locks up

I have a friend who wants to know how to replace the power steering pump on an IH 584 Diesel. When he turns the steering wheel a little too quickly, the steering locks up. The fluid level is good.

Most likely NOT the pump, more than likely in the controller or steering sector but pump would just fail or get weak not lock up then go back to working.

When was the last time that the filter was changed for the transmission, as all fluid feeds power steering and all hydraulics. The 584 needs
that filter change regularly and once changed you have to cycle the steering back and forth until it begins to operate functionally again.
The hydraulic oil gets dirty by hooking on to implements and other machinery where contaminents may be in the residual fluid in their rams
and hoses. I hooked up to my neighbour's tilt wagon and had steering trouble almost immediately, his old tractor didn't have a filter system
and the oil in that wagon hoist was dirty and contaminated. Try a new filter and screen.

Mike, thanks for your advice. The tractor owner said the filter was changed "last week". I think he needs to buy an easy steering "H" like I have!! Ha!
