Pictures Of Trailer Rebuild

Decided to tear out Fox 20' 10,000lb trailer apart and fix a few things. Needed some suspension parts, and we decided to do a new deck and paint as well. Here are a couple pictures!

I had a set of those shackles wear through on a trailer. Got to the job and one axle looked funny. I unloaded it and drove home slowly!

Ya, I do a good look around 2 or 3 times a year, and I knew they were wearing, but I didn't think they were that bad. The bushings for the triangular thing that holds both springs in the middle (equalizer maybe??) were completely gone. Ended up buy new of those, and all new bolts. Also found a cracked leaf in one of the spring packs. We've had it quite a long time, and put a lot of miles on it. Take care of it, and it will take care of you right! ;)

Oh ya! I have brand new tires for it, and was going to have the wheels blasted and powdercoated white, but get this!

At the local place, he said $99 a wheel, I squaked, and he came down to $75 a wheel.

Came home, went online, and can buy BRAND NEW wheels, IDENTICAL to what is on the trailer, for $37 a wheel and free shipping. . . .

So needless to say, there is a set of brand new trailer wheels on their way here! I have a tire machine and will get them put on, then dad can balance them at work.

Ya, I was a little alarmed of the possibility here for that! I feel like as much as they are worn, and hard bump in the road could have broke one through.

Did you check the springs for bending? That is common on that type suspension. Look the axles over close for rust as well. Ive seen those rusted through as well.

The other 3 packs seem to be fine, but the one with the broken one is out of wack, I have a new pack coming to replace it.

I looked the axles over pretty good, but not super good? I also tapped on them a few times on the bottom side with a hammer, still sound really solid hard.

I was nervous you would see this.... You are like the king trailer guy man!! :)

Lol, afraid might be the wrong thing. Looks like a nice job. Compare the new one to the old on the springs, especially the rear axle as they bend easier. And make sure you dont allow the knurled end of the bolt to turn in the shackles or hangers as the bolts being allowed to turn is what causes them to wear out.

This liquid tape is your best friend when wiring a trailer, it is available in most auto parts, hardware and even walmart stores. How you connect the wires is less important than making sure they are sealed well. I use standard wire nuts and after they are on fill them with silicone then dip them in this liquid tape. If you do that you won't have wiring issues til you pull them off. New wires would also be a good idea since everything is easy to get at now. For wire I found that extention cords work much better than automotive wire.

I would have hauled the new lumber home with the trailer before I took it apart ! Actually, that's what I did when I re-floored mine. But ,I should have painted mine like you did yours.Good job Bryce! Mark.

Looks good Bryce. I went through all the suspension on mine last spring. I built the trailer about 25 years ago. It was past due to say the least. I may replace the deck and paint it this year. The wood is solid but starting to weather check pretty bad. That and the carriage bolts holding it down are rusted so thin that they keep breaking.

I'll tell you, if you decided to paint it, I found some awesome stuff! It is a Nason product, 422-05 (I think) But it is "Chassis Black" and the best part is it is premixed, ready to shoot in the can. $88 a gallon from AutoHouse / Car Quest.

It dries to touch in about 10 min, and I BURRIED our trailer in it (shot the entire gallon in 40 minutes), coat after coat, then for prettiness I threw on a thick coat of Clear about 15 min after the final coat of Black was dry to the touch.

The Chassis Black is VERY durable, and requires little to no prep. It has a Rust Inhibitor in it as well. Only down side is there is no UV protection, and it dries to more of a Matte black, but if you put the clear on it, it turns out beautiful!

Personally I don't like the pressure treated. From my experience, pressure treat is made out of more poris wood, like white pine, which is usually not as strong as red fir / larch.

I went with just Fir and Larch framing lumber, stronger, straighter, less knots, and also better to look at! I will treat it with motor oil, last a long time, and look good too.

good evening Bryce, let me say very nice job on the rebuild. Bryce something iv'e used for years on the decks of my trailers to keep the wood from rotting or splitting is used burnt transmission fluid. I get it from my local mechanic or any tranny shop, penetrates the wood better than anything else iv'e used and I use a big paint tray and roller to apply it. the more you put on the better.

Haven't done it myself, but have heard that if used oil is a bit thicker or not penetrating as well as you like, can thin with Mineral Spirits or Naptha.

Bryce, the pressure treated sold here is supposed to be southern yellow pine. The ones you mention you like are not heard of here in Ohio

What do you guys know about a LVLP spray gun? I have one I want to try in the spring as my air compressor is of the smaller output variety. Thanks
