My friend Helgi moving snow with his JCB. The M-F was running strong last summer. Good Perkins diesel. He lent to a friend and it returned dead, not sure what the problem is. He rebuilt the cab on the Zetor and JCB. Also pictured is a dead Suzuki 4x4.

OK I have a question ? why do people live there and what is the way to make a living there -- what do You dig with a backhoe there ? ice ?
do you have dirt there? signed curious from Iowa in the USA -- Roy

The small population is productive. One of the main exports is aluminum. The melt water from the ice fields and Geothermal energy combine to produce cheap energy that can smelt Bauxite (imported) ore into pure aluminum cheaper than almost anywhere. Fishing used to be a massive industry, but not so much any more. Tourism and cottageindustries are also mainstream. This info gathered from 4 Icelandic friends. Jim

Dad was stationed there for a short time in WW2. He liked it, said the folks were very friendly. Thank you

Ya. The diesel that I bought has an aftermarket on it. I need one to make it correct for the restoration.

My Dad was an intelligence officer during the war and was stationed in Iceland for a while.
Told some really neat stories.

Thanks for the replies. Some replies to your replies:

I could use that seat off that Massey. Send it to me would you? LOL
I have dibs on the seat if Helgi decides to let it go, which he won’t. Should fit my Massey F40 ;-)

not much left of the airplane in the second pic…..

He picked up that propeller for some reason or other. Maybe make a giant, dangerous fan?

Right on the ocean? Hence, all the rust?
This area is all fjords. Seawater, yes, but long fingers of ocean reaching inland. Some places the fjords are so big it looks like open sea.

Early on they settled Iceland and fished and raised sheep. That still goes on, along with horse-breeding. Only heavy industry as someone pointed out is Aluminum manufacturing. The areas that can tap into the geothermal energy have very low-cost heat and electricity. There is enough soil to get good hay for the sheep and livestock. Start digging and you run into rocks very quickly.

Your dad saw a very primitive version of Iceland. I didn’t live during that time, but it was very undeveloped and much of the modern infrastructure was introduced thanks to our Navy being stationed there.
