Neighbor's Fire

Amish neighbor just east of me lost his pallet shop to fire this morning. All of his saws and equipment used in the pallet building were in the building, along with large supply of lumber and piles of cutoffs used for firewood.

This is the second Amish pallet shop fire this winter. Couple weeks ago neighbor west of me lost his shop. Lots of wood and extremely hot fires.

Well, as I have learned, that shop is now a toxic site. He will have to contract with the EPA and one of their subs for clean up. The foundation will need to be removed to include all soil within 10 feet of the perimeter of the building to a depth of at least 2 feet. All this will have to be hauled off by a hazmat hauler certified to haul such material. It must go to a preapproved land fill again certified. All the various materials will need to be separated. The fire may have been intense enough to have altered the site geologically so it will have to be recertified as suitable for constructing upon and the foundation reengineered and upgraded. At least that is what we are having to do.

So what was in the shop that the epa is involved??? I know of a farm stead fire that burnt up lawnmowers four wheelers two tractors. No mention of epa or anything. Insurance paid out. All salvage left to the homeowner. Just wondering. gobble

JimS Not an attack. I just don't understand this. If it was a shop of frame construction with just tools in it and firewood why is it now an EPA site?

They have there own insurance company its a scam to get by govt regulations when there after low interest govt loans. The ones i have seen are not to careful around fire one even set his shop on fire three times in one week. Also they won't follow any rules but there own i never seen a fire extinguisher around any of there places.

No. Just somebody who feels the need to throw politics into any conversation. Sad fellows.

Well, the EPA better hurry...

By the time they get there, there will be a new building cranking out pallets.

The neighbors will be saying "What fire?"

One half of my farmhouse burned with me and the wife just able to get out. I went back in for the two cats and had trouble finding the way out with all the smoke. We were taken care of by Allstate with out any problems. I could not get myself to move back in after the nicely done rebuild. Back in NJ since 2007.

If I understand this right this is in Ohio, not CA (crazy america),
They will rebuild and carry on with the help of others

They do have their own insurance but it definatly is not a scam. The only thing different than what you or I would have is it is limited to Amish and everything is done the old fashioned way with paper and US Post office. They have to use bank loans the same as you or I and to do that they do have to have insurance do to banking laws. I would have no difficulty getting all information on the company if I saw any needd to that I do not see a need to. I personally know a bunch of Amish and would trust my life to any of them.

Gene, Just where were these shops? I don't know the places on 13 east of you but I did not think there were any Amish on 13 to west between you and 235. There is on 18 west of 235 tho, one on them? And Sam is south of you so doesn't sound like him.

Good question. The EPA has award over $200 million in contract clean up projects to their vendors. You can bet the skim some of that off. Two answers, because they can and because there is money.
