Fun On The Ice

Back 70 some years ago when this photo was taken you didn't have to go far or spend much money to have fun on the ice. Just get some friends and neighbours together with shovels to clean the snow off the ice on the big slough, tie on the skates and play a little hockey or just skate. I sometimes think about this picture as I work that area of the farm these days. All the good times and memories. This photo from November 1944. Long before I was around.

Actually I am not directly related to any in the photo. I'm guessing my mother took the photo as it is her writing on the photo. Not sure where my uncles were at the time.
 
Can do the same today, though with some modern conveniences, walk behind snow blower or better, atv with plow blade, trash pump for water to surface it if need be. We have for years when the weather cooperates, cleared the ice for a friendly pick up game, it is a lot of fun.

I looked at temp today in Saskatoon and it showed -24 F. -4 F this morning here in Southern MN. These temps remind me of days growing up in ND! I've participated in activities similar to this photo.
 
Love the picture, and reminded me of Christmas vacation from school, we played outside all the vacation. And it could be 13 below like today. We were healthy and happy, and slept well at night!
 
I was wondering that myself. Who is that guy on the left? Will have to get out the original photo to read the name as it is not on the scanned copy.
 
Dad used to tell of the winter they dammed up the drainage ditch and flooded the low land where our pond is now. Made about a ten acre hockey rink and woodland skating area. Neighbor kids got a good whooping from their Dad, and had to dig it out the next spring. The pond got dug around 1950 and made it okay to skate every year. I used to love to shovel off trails, then we would play a chase/tag game on the trails. I need to find the pictures.
