I just got an idea for a fun thread.

Common Tractor misconceptions, what can you add?

My wiring connections are clean, and the battery is new so it has to be a bad starter.

Starters and generators were always painted black from the factory.

Water could only have gotten into my transmission or hydraulic housing through some hole in the top that they left in it at the factory.

I need to convert my NFE tractor to wide front before I can use it to brush hog my back yard, or it will tip over and kill me.

The spark is weak so I need a new coil.

I don't want a diesel because it won't start in the
winter. Not what I think, but heard others say this.

How about this one: If I don't need it, I can always just fix it up and sell it. Might even make a little profit.

All 6 volts need to be converted to 12.

A 12v coil has an internal resistor.

Electronic point eliminators are unreliable.

Old engines must still run 30 weight non detergent oil.

I don't need a shop manual to rebuild my diesel, transmission, steering gear, etc...

The only service an oil bath air cleaner needs is fresh oil in the cup.

I read it on an internet forum, it's got to be true!

Forgot this one: It must be true (or good for you), the guy on TV said so! Or maybe the president (mayor, county super, your mom or ???).

This tractor is a white demonstrator (I can see tinges of white under the "fill in the lank"
That bush is shorter than the chain is long.
The chain is long enough to get the super C good traction to pull out the combine.
Plenty of fuel to make that last round.
I can still see the rows.
5 more bales won;t blow the left front tire.
Harry greased that last week.
I'll just tie off the trip rope on the seat spring.
That sound has been there sence rocks were molten.
I'll steer with the brakes.
Those inside sweeps are no where near the front tires.
The spike tooth drag is leaning against the south side.
That axle will clear the door jamb.
That is dust not smoke.
That __________ isn't hot yet.
Dad won't look there ever.

My dad bought this tractor new in 1958 so don't try telling me the last ones of that model were built in 1952.

"I thought you said 50 ft. lbs." (inch). This really happened to me when some guy at work asked me about a torque. He broke 2 bolts trying to get it to 50 ft lb

"Old engines must still run 30 weight non detergent oil."

^LOL! I know a guy that has worked in a service station for almost 40 years. If you have a question about oil, he either knows the answer or can get it for you real quick.
So a couple of years ago, he overhauled his John Deere B and I was there admiring it. One of the final questions that I had for him was the type of oil that he had in the crankcase. "ND 30W.", he told me. I looked at him and and asked him (with all his experience in oil, remember) why in the world he put non-detergent 30 weight in his freshly rebuilt tractor. I guess I couldn't argue with him when he said that non-detergent had worked well for 60 years, why should he changed what had worked well for him?

Ran when parked or the one I have been seeing a lot lately. Runs great but then goes on to say needs carb work or tune up etc.

Tires were cracked so I had to buy new ones.

Generators don't work, it needs an alternator.

Generators are all 6 volt.

Thermosiphon systems don't work, it has to have a water pump.

Head was cracked so I junked it.

I just replaced all the bearings because I had it apart.

You can't work a tractor without a three point.

And can't bale hay without a live PTO.

I'm buying a John Deere because I know I can always get parts for it.

I'm buying a John Deere because anybody can work on one with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers.

I'm buying a John Deere because of the resale value.

For Sale 8N Ford has pto and 3 point lift.If some one has one without it that would be the rarest tractor on the face of the earth.

I'm buying a John Deere because they outlast everything else.

I'm buying a John Deere because nobody else make good tractors.

I'm buying a John Deere because the invented tractors.

I want a new tractor because the electronics are more reliable.

I'm selling this 8N.

(It could be a Ferguson, Ford made any time into the 1960s, etc.)

The one I have heard often is, ? oh just go by a 40
year old tractor , it will do anything a new tractor will
do, and they never break down? . And if they do,
you can just go to a dealer and buy any parts you
need, and you can fix it yourself.
I have even told myself these stories a time or
two.

Dad used to tell a story about a guy that bought a new binder. Couple days later called dealer and said something was screeching. Service man checked it out and asked if he had greased it. Farmer replied "You shouldn't have to grease a new binder."

Its got FWA no way you can get stuck.
4x4 combines will go any where.
John Deere parts are the highest of any tractor!

Actually, starters and generators were NOT painted at the factory. They recieved a "black oxide" finish, or preservative if you will. I'm talking about the factory that MADE the starters and generators such as Delco-Remy, etc.

The hour meter only says 1200 total since new.

Don't worry that tire has been like that for years.

I just needs a little tug.

It will be as good as new once you get it to turn over with a 10 foot bar.

If you use grade 8 bolts instead of shear bolt you will have less problems.

A little more either is all it needs.

You have to have a battery tender.

You have to use fuel stabilizer.

It's not bent that bad.

A tube of JB Weld and a roll of duct tape will fix anything.

It does not read any oil pressure so it must just be a bad sending unit.

A cargo strap works way better than any factory hood retainers.

Don't worry about that we will fix it this winter.

We only need one more tractor.

Start's right up and run's smooth, intake manifold missing.
Engine and transmission were rebuilt just before it was parked.
You can't weld cast iron without it cracking.
Cows can't tell any difference between weeds and grass if hay is put up right.
Cows give more milk if they are bred to Jersey bulls.
My dog never leave's this yard so there's no way he could have done that.

Or a famous quote from an old farmer back in the late 1930?s......
?I wake up early in the morning and I?m feeling pretty good, then I look out the window at that _ _ _ damn combination ( early IH combine)
And I get sick?.....
Don?t know the exact model but my father used to tell that story!!!

If your 8-N needs more Traction ...hook on to the top link with a chain and pull......( how many Tractor drivers have been killed in this little adventure)

Don't worry if the Rear tires are frozen in 4" of water ....start here up, open the throttle and pop the clutch.........( how many Tractor drivers have been killed in this little adventure)

That there thingy thing that don't let you start the engine when in gear, its a pain in the AR_S. Just remove it..........( how many Tractor drivers have been killed in this little adventure)

The starter packed it in. I use the hand crank to start the old girl.....(oh I guess it was in gear, how many Tractor drivers have been killed in this little adventure)

And the best for last. You can us a 12 Volt battery on a 6 Volt starter and the starter will take it fine!....On a Ferguson TEA-20 the Torsional shock absorber will FAIL.....Just give it time.
